Chilton, Paine, your opinions please.
I'm leaning toward Paine, but he seems light on specifics from what I've found, and I value the opinions of fellow DUers.

Thanks

1. paine's a nice guy, with a long list of work for nonprofits
I've never met or heard anything about Chilton, though, so I can't really compare.

2. I like Herb Paine a lot.
He's not only principled, intelligent, and dynamic, but he does a lot to help other candidates.

3. I know both and Herb is the only "real" candidate.
Don is a nice guy but his only issue is credit card rates. He has done nothing but put up signs. Herb is a dynamic speaker and could win. Don also supports the Iraq war, He is a Lieberman Dem. Actually, he was paracticaly run out of an Anthem Dem meeting on a rail. They couldn't differentiate beyween him and the Reublican ideology. Herb Paine OTOH was a huge success

6. Paine says thanks
Thanks to all the respondents to greyhound1966's query.

I certainly appreciate all the supportive feedback and want to assure you that we're hot on specifics regarding needed changes in policies on the environment, health care, education, and, of course, on redirecting this country's foreign policy.

G, please check out my website at PaineForCongress.org and review my recent statements, press releases, and blog entries. I invite you to let me know if you need more specifics on any issue.

It wouldn't be right to end this reply without a call for contributions. With about 90 days until the election, let me tell you that we're feeling the tide of change. We can unseat one of the most extreme reactionaries in today's Congress, John Shadegg.

We need the word to spread throughout the blogosphere that I stand as a strong champion for progressive change and need a wildfire of financial support to ensure that we unseat Shadegg and restore Congress with a politics of hope, accountability, and balance.

Please spread the word.

Thanks.

Herb Paine

8. I was going to PM you with some specific questions, but apparently you
can't receive them yet.

First, let me say that I will be supporting you in the primary and, of course, will vote for the Democratic candidate in the general.

I am curious why you are supporting a "guest worker" program, while at the same time advocating quality jobs and a living wage? Arizona has been infamous, at least for as long as I've been here (G-parents came here in '68), for sub-standard pay and refusing to enforce what few regulations it has regarding working conditions, overtime, discriminatory hiring practices, etc.
How about enforcing the existing laws that penalize employers for hiring illegal immigrants? Neither Democrats nor Republicans seem interested in taking this route to stemming the flood of economic refugees from south of the border.

Would you support a single payer alternative, or expanding the medicare system to include all Americans, as opposed to the insurance industry giveaways currently being peddled by the denizens of the beltway? If not, would you explain what the problem with these alternatives is?

These are just a couple of issues that are of concern to me and perhaps some other DUers. I hope you have the time to address them.

11. Responses to greyhound1966
Thanks for your support greyhound and for your questions.

For really detailed info on my positions -- especially regarding immigration and health care -- please check out my website at www.PaineForCongress.org.

There you will find among my policy statements a release that proposes the establishment of work clearance centers that can play a role in more effectively managing the flow of migrant labor to perform those jobs for which there is a demand as well as an adequate supply of visas.

Migrant labor makes an economic contribution to this country. However, I agree with you that we ought to ensure safe and healthy working conditions for laborers. It's a failure of trade agreements like NAFTA that adequate provisions were not made regarding working conditions, human rights, and the environment.

With reference to health care, I am a proponent of universal health care. The Medicare system is excellent and would provide a great platform on which to build.

Stay in touch.

Herb

12. It's not just migrant labor in this state...
those who work for less than minimum wage (tipped employees and agri workers), who are getting 'screwed' by this state.

Many migrant workers get 'day labor' wages which are above those cited above. Will you work to increase the federal minimum wage? Will those increases apply to ALL workers in this state?

I work in a restaurant where workers could be paid less than $2.35 per hour to work. How is that justified and will you work toward making sure EVERY worker (tips or no tips) get paid at minimum wage?

I do know this http://azminimumwage.com/ will be on the ballot this year. Will it pass? I don't know, but I do know that something has to be addressed at the federal level even if the state ballot issue does or doesn't pass.

I'm not in your district (Pima County voter) but I had to ask the question.

Your reply was greatly appreciated.

16. It's a pleasure to see a candidate (even if a staffer) on DU!
There's LOADS of wisdom on this board and we often feel like nobody up the Democratic line pays attention.

Shadegg is GONE!

It is a refreshing change from the non-responsive form letter (singular) I have received 6 times, on several different topics, from the Shadegg office.

Good luck to you, and to us, this November!
