Hi You All!
Things have been
greening up on our little hilltop in the Ouachita Mtns of Arkansas. The wild cherry, dogwoods, forsithia, redbuds are all in bloom, and daffodils are everywhere. We've been working long days getting the place ready for Summer. We planted 20 fruit and flower trees last week along with 5 roses. The red clay is HARD on our hilltop (some say mountain) and each hole requires muscle work with a pick and shovel. All of the trees and roses are showing signs of growth. :)
Today, we were working on the garden shed, and preparing the vegetable plot. While we were working, we were entertained by an especially friendly Bluebird that kept zooming around us, chattering and singing. It was unusual. The Bluebirds have been here for a few weeks, but none this
friendly. I went inside for the camera, and stood in the yard trying for a few pix while my friend zoomed around the house. He was chattering and zooming around so fast that my pix were disappointing.
Disappointing Pix of a BluebirdAnyway, I put up the camera, and went back to work in the Veggie Plot. The little guy returned, zooming and chattering. After talking it over with my
partner in crime(Kirsty), we decided that she would finish painting the shed while I went inside and built a Bluebird House. I had never built one before, so I logged on the Net and Googled for blueprints. It was pretty simple and I had some old wood about the right size. A few chops with the miter saw and some screws did the crude, but acceptable job. I screwed the new Bluebird house to a young Oak tree outside the kitchen window. The whole time I kept telling myself, "This is stupid. That bird ain't gonna go in this box!"
I went back inside to put the tools away, and got ready to return to work. On the way to the garden, I went around to kitchen side to look at the new birdhouse. No more than 15 minutes had elapsed......
AND there he was, looking in the hole of his New House!!!!!!!I was stunned! I couldn't believe it!
It was like he was saying, "Yep. This is what I wanted. What took you so long?"
I ran back inside and set up shooting through the kitchen window 10' from the new Bluebird house.
They put on a show!
He checked out the house, going in and out several times.
Then he flew off for a minute, returned with his mate, and showed her the new house.
He stood on top while she was inside. The whistled and sang to each other the whole time.
These two little birds completely blew my shit away!
I stayed away from that area for the rest of the afternoon. I peeked out the window about 5PM and saw the male bringing a blade of grass into his new house! I believe they are moving in! :)
