PUCO Uses New License Plate Scanner To Look For Law Breakers
Source: KTHV, Little Rock

The Pulaski County Sheriff's Department is using a new system that scans license plates of passing cars, checking up to 800 vehicles per hour to see if any are stolen or if the owners are subjects of warrants.

Sheriff Doc Holladay said the unit known as Mobile Plate Hunter 900 is the first of its kind to be used in Arkansas.

Holladay says the system can read plates of cars going as fast as 75 mph.

The scanner system includes two infrared cameras that are attached to a patrol car. Inside the car is a dashboard computer and a processor is in the trunk. The system can read plates as the cruiser is moving, scanning plates of parked and moving vehicles.

2. Do they have nothing better to do?
Like actually do their job instead of indiscriminantly "searching" every person they come upon. But expecting publib workers to do their job seems like an unreasonable demand these days.

3. So this should eliminate their need for high speed chases finally.

Constant monitoring of the citizens, nooo, it's not fascism.

4. So I'm guessing..
they don't have any real crime in Little Rock if they can waste all of their time and resources pulling people over for traffic warrants?

5. Great Idea
I'd like to see the technology advanced beyond merely scanning. It should have the capacity to disable selected vehicles. With all the microprocessors in cars now, that shouldn't be too hard.

9. Why is that?
What's frightening about catching lawbreakers by looking at what is available for all to see?

It's not like the police have developed a machine to look at your hidden files, correspondence, etc. or through the walls of your residence. That would be frightening. This just gives the police a little help looking at something everyone can see.

7. I Wish This Were Around When My Last Car Was Stolen
Increasing the odds of getting caught for lawbreaking is fundamentally good.
