300-Pound Inmate Sues Jail Over Food
Source: Associated Press

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (April 27) - An inmate awaiting trial on a murder charge is suing the county, complaining he has lost more than 100 pounds because of the jailhouse menu.

Broderick Lloyd Laswell says he isn't happy that he's down to 308 pounds after eight months in the Benton County jail. He has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn't provide inmates with enough food.

According to the suit, Laswell weighed 413 pounds when he was jailed in September. Police say he and a co-defendant fatally beat and stabbed a man, then set his home on fire.

"says he isn't happy that he's down to 308 pounds." Un-freaking-believable.

1. This is the favorite pastime of prisoners
Prisoners have nothing to do. The prisons have a law library. There are always one or two "jailhouse lawyers," who know how to scam the system by filing lawsuits and they teach other inmates how to prepare and file lawsuits. I used to work in a court processing new;y filed suits. These things were a regular occurrence. Somewhere around 100 percent of them were tossed out, because they were just as stupid as this.

But the media has a field day with them to prove to people that the system is clogged with "frivolous lawsuits" and that the rest of us need to have our rights curtailed.

Get into a conversation over the next few weeks with someone about tort reform -- taking away your right to seek redress against corporations -- and this case will be mentioned as an argument against you having your rights. Guaranteed.

This is the only reason the corporate media showcases this handful of silly suits -- most of which never get beyond the filing stage.

3. I am sensing a reality show in the making
Or maybe a lost business opportunity. "Jailhouse fit club." Washed out celebs go to prison, eat prison chow, and lose weight. Or it could be the newest fad diet.

Either way, the dude should be thankful--it sounds as if prison food is adding to his quality of life and adding years to his lifespan.

at 3000 calories a day, he's probably taking in half to a third what he used to.

i can' help thinking about dr. doolittle getting himself sent to jail so he had time to think & write.

7. Well, let's see....
If he weighed 413 and was at 50% BF (highly obese), he's over 200 lbs of 'lean mass'. At about 60 cal/lb/day for lean mass + 3 cal/lb/day for adipose mass, we're talking about a guy with a basal metabolic rate of over 3000 cal/day.

That's just sitting around.

If he's doing any exercise, he could be between 4000-5000 cal/day... even more.

If the jail is offering 2000 cal/day, he could have been losing 5 or 6 lbs a week in the first few months, then, as his metabolism adjusted, he'd start to plateau at a lower rate. If he's drinking water and exercising, then most of the loss will be body fat.

Jail is a gift for this guy.

I hope the judge tells him to fuck off.

13. He's getting 3000 calories a day. It doesn't much matter because he's going to be tried for murder.

10. The accompanying AOL poll asks the following....
What's your reaction to the inmate's lawsuit?

Thumbs up.

Thumbs down.

Here's a better set of responses:

Tell inmate to put his thumb up his ass.

Fuck off.

:wtf:

A convicted murderer who wants sympathy for not having honey buns and ho-hos to stuff his fat face? He gets the same amount of food as everyone else so this is nothing more than gluttony and a pathetic attempt to to get an extra serving of "bullshit burgers"!!!!!!!
