What is Modesto, CA like?
Been out of work for several months now, and absolutely nothing is materializing. Had 2 technical phone interviews and one in person interview in 7 months.

I applied for a perm gig in Modesto, CA. Don't yet know who the client is for whom I would be working, but I know it's a food manufacturer.

Wife and I grew up in the D.C. suburbs, and we've been in Miami (FL), Burlington (NC), Harrisburg (PA), Bellevue (WA), and now Puyallup (WA).

I figure the climate will be closest to Miami, but a whole lot dryer.

2. Every time they do one of those "most livable places in the US" surveys
Modesto shows up at or near the bottom.

And for awhile it was the auto theft capital of the country.

But it really isn't all that awful. First of all it's only 80 miles or so from San Francisco, two hours to the coast, two hours to Yosemite, and three hours to Lake Tahoe.

And since real estate there is really in the dumper, your housing dollar will go a lot further than a lot of "nicer" places.

It's hot and sticky in the summer, cold and damp in the winter, but the springs and falls are fantastic.

4. There's always a learning curve for these Valley Towns.
Fresno, Stockton, Sacramento -- they all have harsh sides, beige strip malls, and a lot of pain right now -- but if you keep poking, you'll find pockets of very cool people. Special places. Takes time. I'm in Sacramento, and when I first came here, I kinda hated it. Now, I know what's cool about it and what's not.

There's far worse places. Arizona, fer instance. Good Lord.

5. Hot and flat, but otherwise OK
I live east of Sacramento, where it is hot and hilly. After living in LA/OC for 21 years it took some getting used to, but I like it here.

6. More like Phoenix, at least in summer.
Triple digits not uncommon. But cold and foggy in winter.

The good news: It's only about 60 miles from SF, and even closer to BART at Dublin/Pleasanton.

7. Towns in the southern part of the valley range from outright depressing to merely boring.
Based on the number of middle-sized, sort of suburbanish towns on your list, you probably won't mind it much. It's a kind of oversized farm town-turned-bedroom-community surrounded by smaller, farm-ier towns.

The weather isn't like Florida, because there are distinct seasons- summer is miserably hot and very dry, winter is cool (but rarely cold enough to freeze) and intermittently rainy, spring is the loveliest two weeks of your life, fall tends to be foggy in the morning but otherwise very nice. Also there no humidity to speak of and the wildlife is infinitely less poisonous.

8. I see the Valley bashers have shown up.
The San Joaquin Valley is mostly a series farming communities. We have a Mediterranean climate which means hot in the summer and fairly mild winters. People who claim that we're boring are, most likely, boring IRL and they would find virtually anywhere boring. We have a wide variety of cultures here and a wide variety of people ranging from eclectic to pretty right wing. We don't all think alike and we don't all act alike. I find that if you treat people with respect, they'll treat you with respect, no matter where you are. People from other parts of the state look down their nose at us, we're the "poor relations" so to speak and we're treated as such. Believe it or not, there are millions of people who live here who like it just fine.

10. I work in Stockton which is about a half hour from Modesto.
Today it was 104 but cooled down to 92 by the time I left at 7:30pm. Modesto is a very conservative town, the Valley mostly is conservative. There is is Stanislaus State (CSUS) in Turlock which is 15 miles South. Modesto also has a decent Junior College and it's not too far from the Bay Area.

Winters are cold with very thick Tuley fog. The whole of January you hardly see the sun.

There are some nice things though, the farm land around there is beautiful and Lodi Appellation is about 40 minutes away if you're into Zinfandel.

If you have children the schools would be a concern. I have my children in private school.

12. Modesto is the #2 city in the country for car theft, nearby Fresno is #1.
Most large cities in California have a big vehicle theft problem, but the valley tends to have it worse because there's lots of room to hide and disassemble vehicles and there's a big street racing culture which creates a lot of demand for stolen parts. So depending on what kind of car you drive and whether or not it's a commonly stolen car (the top ten list consists of a bunch of Japanese sedans and domestic pickups) you might want to invest in a good alarm or get a place with a garage.

It's comparatively quiet otherwise, but if you come from a place where you're not in the habit of locking your car up, you'll definitely want to fix that asap.

13. Very Very close to the Bay Area , but not bay area
hot in the summer (it'll get above 108 a few days of Summer mostly low 100s and 90s) mild mild in the winter.

Modesto is growing fast, I have a friend who lives in modesto. lots of water and fun activities to keep you cool in the summer.

14. Its just a medium sized town on the other side of the mountains
from the Bay Area. If you're from coastal California, it may be a little more conservative, but the area is still a swing area. The climate is somewhat different too. Add about 10 degrees to the average summer temperature and subtract 10 degrees from the winter temperature.

15. It gets to 108-112 for about 21 days of the summer.
Btw if you get the job in Modesto you can live in Ripon, Riverbank, Manteca or Lodi. Much smaller towns, lower crime rate too.

I live in Redding and I don't think we have that many really hot days.

Modesto probably gets the Delta breeze too.

21. 108-112? Rarely.
Edited on Sat Jul-02-11 02:03 AM by Xithras
Our temperature spikes that high on rare occasion, but it doesn't stay that high for more than a day or two. A typical "hot" summer day will be 103-105, and a "normal" summer day will be in the upper 90's to low 100's.

I know we've had 112 degree days, but I can't actually remember the last time it happened. it's been years.

16. American Graffiti was filmed there
I know the area, I was stationed at the closed Castle AFB, in Atwater/Merced. It's not too far from Yosemite. And the bay area is also close. Also trips to Lake Tahoe and Reno aren't bad. There are worse places.

18. Lodi gets the Delta breeze, Stockton and Modesto don't seem
to get too much of it.

My car read 109F on Mon, Tues, and Wed at 4:30pm in Stockton. Modesto is about 2-3 degrees warmer than Stockton.

I was in Madera onetime in the middle of July and it was 112F and I could barely breath.

I asked my Auntie how she could stand it? She said they stay inside all day and at about 8pm they go out by the pool and start to relax. We could hear people out in their backyards until 1am.

20. American Graffiti was filmed in Petaluma
Lucas wrote the movie about his teen years in Modesto, and many of the places in the movie were modeled after real locations in Modesto (few of which exist in Modesto anymore), but he didn't film it here. Modesto's downtown went through an "urban renewal" in the late 60's and was modernized (by 60's standards), and Lucas felt that the look was too "modern" for his film by the time he was ready to start filming in the early 70's. He filmed it in Petaluma because it still had that late-50's/early-60's look he needed.

It's always been a local sore spot...not one second of the film that put Modesto on the map was actually filmed here.

25.  American Graffiti was also filmed in Mill Valley, San Rafael, and San Francisco
I first saw the film overseas, in a Quonset hut, and received a huge jolt of nostalgia when I discovered sock hop scene was filmed in my high school gymnasium in Mill Valley.

I also recognized the businesses on Fourth Street, San Rafael, in some of the cruise scenes.

Mel's drive-in (two blocks from my Pop's office) was in San Francisco.

I only learned recently that the lion's share of the movie was filmed in Petaluma.

19. I grew up in and around Modesto. Live a couple miles north of it today.
Literally, a couple of miles. If I climb the big tree behind my house, I can see the taller Modesto buildings in the distance.

Modesto, overall, isn't a bad place to live. The people are friendly, the amenities are modern (it hasn't been a "farm town" for 20 years), there's good shopping, the schools are pretty good, it's very ethnically diverse, no major traffic problems, etc. I grew up in this area, could afford to leave tomorrow if I wanted, and yet I'm still raising my kids here...if there's a bigger vote of confidence, I don't know what it is.

That's not to say that it's without its problems. As others have mentioned, we have a bit of notoriety for our crime rates, mostly auto theft. What those rates don't mention is that most of those thefts tend to be concentrated in the poorest areas of the city. While car thefts and crimes happen everywhere in the city (as they do in all cities), the majority of Modesto is no more or less "dangerous" than any street in any other city in America with a comparable population.

It also does tend to get a bit warm here in the summer. It will be 103 here on Sunday, but it's a dry heat and really isn't that bad once you get used to it. High heat is tolerable when you have very little humidity. And, contrary to what some of the other posters have said, we DO get the Delta breeze here (breezes blowing in off the Pacific through the Carquinez Strait). Modesto is generally considered to be the southern boundary of the Valley cities where the ocean breezes can still be felt. They're not as strong or quite as cool as they are further north, but it's still not bad.

Politically, it's a mixed bag. Modesto has a Democratic majority, but they tend to be the more conservative blue-dog type Democrats. You won't find a whole lot of compatriots if you're a strong leftist liberal, but they won't give you any problems either. The town has some openly gay bars, and a regular Pride Parade, and neither has ever generated any controversy. Modesto does have a large Republican population but they're usually the mellower "I disagree with you, but God can deal with you later" types. Our teabagger groupies occasionally hold rallies on the main drags, but aren't a problem. OUTSIDE of Modesto, in the smaller towns and farm country, is a different story. Some towns like Oakdale and Ceres are hard right, and people have had their cars keyed for simply flying the wrong bumper sticker. Modesto is a moderate island in the middle of a conservative red county, and its politics reflect that. Conservative Democrats in Congress, moderate farmer Republicans in the statehouse, a fairly moderate city council, and a solidly Republican county board that tends to avoid moral issues but is solidly pro-business.

The worst thing about Modesto, at the moment, is that our local economy has been absolutely hammered by this economic downturn. The cities industrial areas are full of shuttered factories, it's surrounded by half-built subdivisions that the builders walked away from when the market crashed, and our unemployment rate actually hit 18% at one point. Things are improving today, but there are still a LOT of shuttered storefronts throughout the city, and a lot of smaller local businesses are still having problems staying open. This isn't really a "problem" if you have a job, but it can be a bit depressing driving around town and seeing all of the dark stores...especially for those of us who remember a few years ago when our economy was doing exceptionally well, even by California standards.

As someone else mentioned, you do also have the option of living outside of Modesto and driving in. The city is ringed by a number of smaller towns and cities that are only a few minutes away by car. Some, like Riverbank, Ripon, and Salida, and Hughson, are fairly nice. Del Rio and Escalon are wonderful. Others, like Empire and Ceres should be avoided at all costs because of crime and gang problems (Ceres has a real problem with police brutality, and is dark-red conservative to boot). As I mentioned above, you might want to avoid political discussions with your neighbors though (Salida isn't that bad in the "subdivision" parts, because it's mostly populated by people who moved from the more liberal Bay Area).

By the way, if you're looking at a perm job with a "food processor", you're probably looking at Del Monte Foods, Gallo Wines, or Frito Lay. There are a number of food processing and production companies in Modesto, but those are the big three.

26. Yes to both.
St. Stans no longer operates the giant brewpub on 9th, but they still own the brewery and operate a small public bar on the backside of the building. The rest of the building was sold off and is now a sports bar. I miss the old brewpub, but the beer is still there and as great as ever. They just didn't have the foot traffic to keep the brewpub operating.

And yes, Deva Cafe is still there, and the food is as good as ever.
