More progressive talk radio |
|
I just received this email from Sue Schaffer of HD 24:
"In addition to 760 AM Air America, several people wrote about KGNU -- a community (public, non-commercial) radio station from Boulder on FM 88.5 ("as far to the left as you can get!"), which has recently acquired a Denver outlet: 1390 AM It carries a lot of eclectic music, but also BBC World News."

3. KGNU is better then 760! |
|
Listening to Air America on a Clear Channel station just makes the evil empire more money that they can donate to the Chimp. Listen to Air America on the net instead.

4. KGNU versus Air America... different markets, different materials. |

Frankly, KGNU drives me nuts. I guess you can call me type A or something, but I tend to be rather hard-headed and skeptical, and a lot of KGNU's programming can be touchy-feely and pseudoscientific, which makes me twitchy. There's also their music programming... going from African music to bluegrass is what programming specialists call a trainwreck. The same for Folk to techno... you get the idea...
I send KGNU my money, but I never listen to them. I download Amy Goodman and any pacifica programming I want and ignore the rest.
And as far as 760 on CC goes? well.... if I make sure I don't buy from their advertisers, then they're losing money on me and I'm not straining the AAR servers that are streaming. For me, its a win-win situation... and Ed Schultz is growing on me. And I can listen in the car. A big plus.
And yes, I don't buy from the CC advertisers, mostly because they're not selling anything I want, but also because I don't buy things I see advertised. (It's a weird quirk in my brain...)
Pcat.
On edit: Listening to a radio station does not make it money. Advertisers make a radio station money.

5. But if people boycott advertisers... |

...the station doesn't sell ads, hence, AAR gets yanked.
I loathe Clear Channel, but I do applaud their enthusiasm for liberal talk radio. And if CC ever saw put to bring AAR to my town, I would support it.
Remember, without advertiser support, Clear Channel will just flip the thing to sports or something like that. If you really like a station, and it provides innovative programming, support the advertisers, or at least let them know you appreciate their support of the station.
If people ignore advertisers and it keeps them from advertising on unique stations, it only motivates companies like Clear Channel to program 'lowest common denominator' formats, meaning wall-to-wall Celine Dion and Britney Spears. Supporting adventurous programming might influence CC to do more adventurous programming. Radio only exists with advertiser support.
