Diana DeGette to oppose ANWR drilling |
|
Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). I am pleased to have the opportunity to learn your views and to share mine.
Like you, I believe Congress must do everything in its power to protect this wonderful treasure. You may be pleased to learn that I joined my colleagues in sending a letter opposing the inclusion in of ANWR drilling in any budget bills, because I share your concerns about protecting and preserving this fertile and diverse ecosystem. In addition, I was an original cosponsor of H.R. 770, the "Arctic National Wilderness Act," in the last session of Congress. This legislation would designate the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as wilderness, prohibiting development on the ANWR coastal plain and conserving it for generations to come. I believe this legislation is an important step in defending our environment, and reaffirms the obligation we have as citizens to its preservation. You may be assured that I will continue to oppose all efforts to open ANWR to oil exploration. Again, thank you for contacting me. Please feel free to visit my website at www.house.gov/degette for further information, where you can sign up for my e-newsletter to stay up-to-date on current events on Capitol Hill. I look forward to our continued communication.
Sincerely,
Diana DeGette Member of Congress

Rep. DeGette is one of the few Members of Congress who has actually visited ANWR, spoken with the indigenous people who would be impacted by the proposed drilling, and seen the migration of the caribou that the drilling would disrupt.
It would be helpful if Colorado residents wrote to Senator Ken Salazar and to Rep. John Salazar to urge them to join Rep. DeGette in voting no on drilling in ANWR. Rep. Udall is undoubtedly already opposed to drilling and the Republicans in the Colorado delegation are lost causes on environmental issues.
Does anyone know the Salazars' positions on this issue?

Sen. Salazar recently told the Sierra Club that he wants to vote for protection of the Refuge, but is not convinced that he has enough political coverage among Colorado constituents to do so. It's important for Coloradoans to call or write and implore him to vote for ANWAR protections.

Here it is again (with email)
Salazar, Ken - (D - CO) UNITED STATES SENATE WASHINGTON DC 20510 (202) 224-5852 Web Form: salazar.senate.gov/contactus.cfm
edit: That email doesn't want to appear as a link -- I guess just copy and paste.
Let him know how those who supported him (us) feel.
