A Primary for Musgrave?
The Ft. Collins Coloradoan reports that former State Representative Bill Kaufman, from Loveland, is considering challenging Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave in a primary:

Kaufman, 56, called himself "on the fence" when it comes to his campaign plans. But he said he has been urged to run by "a lot of people" - including former 4th District Rep. Jim Johnson, a Republican. "They want someone who's going to concentrate on the war in Iraq, Social Security, the economy - those kinds of things," Kaufman said. "Let's get down to business and focus on the real issues."

Kaufman said Musgrave's vocal sponsorship of an amendment barring gay marriage has distracted her from other issues and turned off some members within her own party. A former representative of District 51 in Loveland, Kaufman called himself a "traditional" Republican. He joined the Legislature in 1992 when he was appointed to the District 51 seat following the death of Rep. John Irwin. Kaufman was elected in 1994 and served until 2000, and currently is area representative on the Colorado Transportation Commission.

With Musgrave already on the GOP's endangered list, you'd have to think that the Republican powers-that-be would do whatever they could to prevent a primary.

2. I can't decide if it's better

to have her as the Repub, so that our Dem can beat her and get the seat...
or if it's just better for her to be gone period (beaten in her own primary), and possibly have to have our Dem run against a stronger (or at least more sane) candidate like Kaufman.

3. I'd prefer
winning the seat. Any Republican will vote to keep Delay in power. I'd prefer a vote for Pelosi.

5. Bill Kaufman
Kaufman is a principled and bright Republican, who took on the religious right several times in his career. That's why the rightists in his party consider him a "RINO" -- Republican in Name Only.

Kaufman would be a huge improvement over Musgrave. He would not support anti-gay legislation and may even be pro choice.

It is nearly impossible for a Dem to win in the 4th C.D. Republicans have held that seat at least since '73. Here are the voter demographics from the 2004 Almanac of American Politics:

Registered Voters: 841,997 D (30.1%); 1,012,518 R (36.1%); 946,826 unaffiliated and minor parties (33.8%)

Many of the unaffiliates in that district are pretty conservative and the churches in rural Larimer County get their people to the polls.

If Kaufman is the only alternative to Musgrave, then we should wish him well.
