Got a job in Golden, any decent places to live at nearby?
Not too familiar with the area. What are some decent, not too expensive places that will have interesting things to do in the few hours I'm not working?

I'm trying to decide if it's really worth commuting 20+ mins from Denver to Golden. I like some aspects of living in an urban area. I like being able to walk to places nearby. But would Golden offer the same opportunities? I also have a car, but it'd be great if I don't have to drive it everywhere. Plus, Denver is a bit more expensive.

Also are there areas that generally have higher crime? And not that safe?

Thanks!

2. Try the Green Mountain area......
It's just east of Golden, off Sixth Ave. It's part of Lakewood. If your job is on the south side of Golden, it would be a really easy commute.

Green Mountain is a pretty nice, quiet and safe area. Good access to both Sixth Ave. and I-70. There's a decent Mexican restaurant called "Jose O'Shea's" that's got a pretty cool atmosphere. There's a bunch of the typical chain stuff on Union Ave, but it looks pretty nice, and much of it is within walking distance of the majority of apartments around there. There is not much in the way of bars around there; as far as I know, only an Old Chicago and an Ironworks, but an abundance of liquor stores make up for it.

I would imagine that Green Mountain would be a little less expensive than Golden, but not as pricey as Denver itself.

Oh, and congratulations on your new job! Best of luck to you!

I know there's an apartment complex in Green Mountain close to Alameda Parkway and Mississippi (if memory serves me correctly) on the west side that looked pretty nice. I visited there once to do a repair of a computer. Looked pretty safe to me. It is just about a mile off 6th avenue, and it is a 10-15 minute commute, and the bus lines are there on Alameda Parkway.

3. welcome to Colorado!
I grew up in Lakewood, not too far from Golden. I would vote for living in Golden or a surrounding neighborhood, Green Mountain, Arvada, etc. You could commute from Denver, but morning commutes can be ugly in the entire Denver area. Yeah, Golden has some unique spots but as the other poster stated, Green Mountain has a lot more housing, etc. And if you need to catch a Rockies game or have a burning desire to go to "the big city", it isn't more than a quick trip on the freeway- AND!!! we have a lightrail track being built that will go directly into downtown. On the plus side, Golden still has a small town feel, as does Olde Town Arvada, which is 15minutes away. Good luck to you, fujiyama and welcome to Colorado. As for things to do, if you like outdoor activities, they are all outside your front door. Hiking, biking, rafting, etc. Boulder is just 20 minutes up Highway 93 and that has always been one of my favorite haunts. Celestial Seasonings tour factory anyone?

Denver is not that expensive. Just have to know a good location to jump to the light rails that will take you to Golden. Capitol Hill is very cheap, actually ($400-800/mo rent depending on location)
