Breaking News: Groton base on closure list
http://www.wfsb.com/Global/story.asp?S=3339856

GROTON (AP) -- The Associated Press has learned the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton is on the Pentagon's list of proposed base closures.

Is this a sign of the Bush vendetta against anyone who opposes him?

Republican Rob Simmons is the Rep in my district, which houses this base. Wonder if he'll survive the 2006 elections. Maybe, Bush Co. figured Simmons was expendable.

1. Oh boy
So what does this mean for Electric Boat and the east of the river economy? I won't be sad to see EB go but what kind of fall out will this have on the working class? Simmons a lame duck now.

2. I am not really surprised. I live 5 minutes from the
base. This is more than 25,000 jobs. The domino effect will be devastating.

3. Man oh man this is really conflicting.
EB:

Source of all that I find vile and evil about the military industrial complex.

It's also a driving force in the economy in which working class people can find work.

I was born on that base.

Today fucking blows. check out LBN

4. How do you get the 25k number?
Not that I doubt it, in terms of services that support the base, just that the PDF I looked at had about 8500 as the number of lost jobs. Ugh. South east CT goes to shit?

6. The 25k number is what they
are reporting on the news as the number of jobs that will be affected by the closure. So I imagine its not just directly subbase jobs but also jobs that exist because of the subbase being there.

7. Wow 25,000
That is HUGE. I would rather Rob Simmons stay in office another 2 years than lose that base. That Simmons is probably going to get his pink slip next year over this is not much of a consolation prize.

This is on top of Sikorsky losing out the presidential helicopter a few months back.

Not a good time to be a blue stater.

8. BUSH is to BLAME
He is cutting out our sub-base because he knows that Connecticut can't stand him and his conservative friends. I am glad that Rob Simmons will be kicked out so we can pick up another Democratic seat. Let's just hope it a real Democrat and not another Joe Lieberman

9. It's unbelievable.
I grew up in New London, and I can tell you that (at least when I was there) New London High School existed to fit workers into Electric Boat and the sub base. A bunch of us went to the principal once *requesting* a Latin course -- the answer was "no!" But boys' "shop" classes were all about ship-fitting, pipe-fitting and welding and such, and girls took business classes to work at EB as expected. The guidance office had nothing to say if we wanted to go to college. ("Go to what? So you're not going to EB?") Hopefully times have changed since then, but I'm just sayin' I know how important the base is to the area. Will EB leave? Will the Coast Guard Academy? Will Sikorsky survive all the business going to Lockheed?

What a strange lot of coincidences. I don't live in CT anymore, but wanted to stop by and say that I'm worried for the state.

10. Please let me join my wife and chime in here
Hi all. :hi:

I am beyond shocked today. Groton. I can't believe it. I posted this earlier today in a fit of unrestrained pique. A rant. If I offended anyone, I really, honestly appologize.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=3650483&mesg_id=3650483

I had a similar feeling when I heard Marine One went elsewhere. My Dad worked most of his life at Sikorsky, starting when it was at Seaside Park in Bridgeport. I worked there one summer and for a year between the Navy and college. I went to their union Christmas parties when I was a kid. My aunt worked from WWII to her retirement at Nordens. My uncle was at Lycoming till they closed.

God ... what's next?? The Coast Guard Academy?

I feel absolutely awful today.

This is how the Bush family treats their home. They desert it and then they shit on it.

11. I live in the area too. (Gales Ferry).
And I am shocked as well. I cannot imagine this area without the base. Its not just the base. Its the ripple effect. All the businesses that depend on the base, the schools, real estate. It would be devastating.

As for Bush being from CT I don't know exactly why but I think he despises CT and everything about it, New England and the N.E. He tries hard to show himself off to be a true TExan. What better way to prove you are not from CT than to screw the STate royally? I don't buy the bit they are saying that this is only recommendations from the Pentagon and that the President had no idea. You can bet he wanted facilites from the North East targeted. CT was hit the hardest of everyone. Wonder if that was partly deliberate? I am so upset about this I can hardly think about anything else!

12. Anybody else think this and the helicopter contract...
...is revenge, not just for being a blue state, but for trying to bring justice to Bush's partner-in-crime, John Rowland?

Just a theory.

13. Politics
Its all about Politics, it is because we are a blue state. What i find ironic is that bush is all for "homeland security" but shutting down our sub base? My friends and I have grew up around in that sub base. We MUST fight against this action, as much as we can. The Loss of jobs and to the economy will be distarious to this area.

Yesterday, a dumb person came up to me, and blammed "the liberals" for this problem. The only one to blame in this situation is the republicans and every single republican that voted for bush. You got what you voted for fools!!

Terrible this is, and we must fight to the bitter end!

14. Question I'd love to here Rummy answer
How well are we going to protect our North Atlantic shipping, as well as major cities like New York and Boston, without a nearby sub base?

16. Bush,s speech 6/28/05
In Deed, Good afternoon, I am an old submarine person, New construction as you may know, Things have gone a bit haywire since H.G. Rickover passed along. I wrote a summation of Bushe,s speech And I would like to share it with you all. ------------------- In Deed, President bush did manage to get a point across. No time line. Sending mixed signals would leave them the impression that all they need do is wait us out. And on the other hand we will not be trusted. (Abandonment) A thing called mass killing as a result of abandonment. So he did sum it up there. Should we be there? I think not. But we are there so we must do the right thing. To understand terrorism reguards to the middle east as a whole,we must also understand middle eastern countries. (The United Arab Republic. I am only going one way on this one. Psychological war fare, and terrorisum across the middle east and the world. Nomads, travelers, born at point a. and residing at some point b. One thing in common one religion, same belief. A common belief that America is some kind of evil empire. A religion that teachs from the very begining of understanding ,that it is not of this life that matters, but the next only. Now how many countries are there in the middle easy? And how much of that in space does Iraq take up?Compare Rhoad Island to america north america and there you may have some type of comparison. So you see it,s a very very big world. Spreading freedom, democracy, it,s a very, very, very big world. Have you ever spotted mile markers down the old interstate highway? Would you compare one of those to a rather large imprint, if you know what I mean? The thing of it is we are at war and we must support what ever is that plan. Though at the same time the president really did not say a thing positive about the situation. So than let me make this perfectly clear, The President said at a point in his speech, that we must get past 911. Get on with it, put it behind us, we are not a nation of people hiding under our beds over it, move on. And later on in his speech he goes on to remind us repeatedly (RIGHT) to his closing words. So let me reiterate further to sum up all George Bush said in his speech---- 1-2-3-4 ,(Do a little tap dance than shuffel over to the right, got ya covered, nine ten no problum, sha do da do! thats it.) So in conclusion let me further say JUST SAY NO TO GEORGE BUSH. TOO FAR IS JUST THAT. Thankyou and good evening your friend Desk Jet of Washington State.
