What about Same Sex Marriage? |
|
What happened to this discussion? Are our legislators just going to forget it because they gave us a half loaf of bread? Civil unions is still discriminatory. They need to correct this by allowing equal treatment for all people. Same sex marriage is the ONLY viable option and we must press our legislators to make it happen next session. Will they do the right thing next session? We control both the House and Senate...Whats the problem? Will Jodi veto it...if so, then all the Democrats who think she is so wonderful will be able to wake up and elect a Democrat like Susan Bysiewicz.

1. it's up to activists to keep reminding them |

If we get enough people to write their legislators, it will be brought up again next year. However, I'm guessing that Rell would veto the bill if it passed next year, as she said as much before, and I doubt the House would be able to override the veto, as it tends to be more conservative than the Senate.
If we don't get enough people to bring it up with the legislators, then same sex marriage won't be brought up again until there is a Democratic governor here or until more states pass similar laws.

Rell never really said she would veto same sex marriage she kind of skirted the issue and said she would like to see some statement that defended marriage...what ever that means. I would have liked to see same sex marriage pass with no restrictions and see exactly how she handles it. Will she or won't she? Our Democratic majority should put her to the test. What good is it having the majority if they're going to let the Repukes set the agenda? We need some leadership from our majority and we should target Democrats who don't support equality. If they don't support our core values why should we support them? We have enough Dino Lieberman's in our party. I know my State Rep supports us...my Senator is an old senile jerk.

3. same sex marriage lawsuit is proceeding |
|
I don't have a link, but heard it on WTIC on the way home... but, the lawsuit to allow same sex marriage in Connecticut is proceeding.
I'm not sure about Rell. While she may have not outright said that she'd veto full gay marriage, I think it was implied when she wanted marriage defined as one man & one woman if she was going to sign the civil unions bill.

I am happy to hear this but, won't a lawsuit take years to be heard?

Probably will take years to get through appeals processes & the like, though. There is an article in the Friday, July 29 Hartford Courant on it, but I am busy with work today.
