What does everybody think of the car tax situation?

No doubt Rell wants to look pretty for the fall! I guess I really don't have an opinion on the matter; it's not wise if it will take money away from other things but from what I've read the casinos will make up for that.

The state has a history of promising money & then not delivering.... so, while maybe they get reimbursed this year with casino money, what happens if the state is in a deficit next year? Do we take casino money and then screw the cities & towns?

Definitely can't rule out deficits in the future; what a mess that would be for the towns / cities.

3. On the other hand

a $15,000 car in Waterbury or Bridgeport is taxed at a lot higher rate than a $15,000 car in Greenwich.

of course, how many $15,000 cars are garaged in Greenwich? A few might pass through town, or work in town, however. And, many on the Gold Coast make too much to qualify for the property tax rebate, so the dropping of the car tax for somebody owning an $80,000 Mercedes, a $50,000 SUV and one or two other cars is in for a nice windfall.

4. My tax prep guy said we would want the car tax to be eliminated

and we are not THAT well off. However, I am against any tax that is regressive. I feel that I pay my taxes to support my local government from which I derive services. Also, I agree with the poster who warned about the state reneging on its promise. That could be a real problem!

5. I hate the car tax, on the other hand, we're using town roads so I guess

this tax helps pay for plowing, sanding and road repairs.
