Colin McEnroe's take on today's NY times article about Lieberman
Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 09:47 AM by monarch
"I'm a little troubled by the tone of today's page one New York Times article on the troubles of Joe Lieberman. The first two-thirds of the piece are dominated by a head-skaing tsk-tsk tone, but in the writer's own choice of words about "the left" and "anti-activists" practicing "bloody-knuckle" politics. It strikes me that the author succumbed to several easily avoided fallacies.

...snip...

"I live in Connecticut. I report here and talk to politicians here. Let me assure the New York Times that this sentiment has been building for years. What was always sad was the timidity and fatalism of more mainstream polticians who would speak quietly about the desirability of challeninging Lieberman and then -- like mice who want to hangia bell around the neck of the housecat -- admit they could not imagine pulling off such a thing."

1. I'm really sick of the marginalizing too...
"the left" and "anti-activists" practicing "bloody-knuckle" politics

I've got to say quotes like that make me angry. What exactly is an anti-activist? If it's a guy who's supported mainstream candidates over the years, reads the newspapers, works in the public safety arena, has lost a family member on 911, and still wants Joe out then I guess I'm one of those lunatics. One of the lunatics who could see through the BS we were being fed after 911 while geniuses like cup-o'-Joe couldn't tell the difference between a Saudi terrorist and an Iraqi kook boxed in by the UN with no army! These guys couldn't find their way so they attack the wrong country.

That's the kind of experience we need to re-elect? If we do then we're the morons.

2. Love that guy. He's so right.
I've seen more Lamont lawn signs around my town... they're never up now, and there usually aren't so many signs up anyway. These aren't at the usual spots, either -- you know the houses who always have signs up?

People, not these near-mystical "bloggers", are pissed.

I can't say I've heard a whole lot of "here's exactly what I like about Lamont". But I HAVE heard a whole lot of "here's exactly what I DON'T like about Lieberman". And that's from just-folks, not you crazy wild-eyed leftist internet people (sarcasm there).

3. Crazy, wild-eyed leftist here, grandma of 4
Jeez, here I am, paying taxes, getting the lawn mowed, being a good neighbor, and I'm labeled a nut!

Maybe that's a little better than "brain dead," that according to Benchley, who seems to have an unhealthy animus against us Lamont folks!

P.S. Got my lawn sign up and my bumpersticker on!

4. LOL. You, you BLOGGER you!
Funny how just knowing someone's preference in one senate primary is enough to know all sorts of things about them, isn't it?

(You know I was joking, though, right?)

to tell us what to do in our own Senate race. I actually asked one poster to tell me where he lived and I would tell him what to do, is that a deal? No response!

7. I loved the part in that NYT story
Where the writer implied that Lieberman's Democratic senate colleagues weren't being fully loyal to him
because they wouldn't promise to support him IF HE RAN AGAINST LAMONT IN THE FALL AS AN INDEPENDENT.

Poor Joe...what kinda fair weather friends are THOSE nervous Nellies?
