Hoping to turn uncertainty and displeasure over the new program to his advantage, Sullivan joined a group of senior citizens making its third pilgrimage to the offices of Simmons and Rep. Nancy Johnson, R-5th District, to protest what they see as ambiguity in the new program, and to complain that their efforts to obtain cheaper drugs in Canada are being blocked by Pfizer Inc., one of Simmons' biggest contributors.

Simmons has received more than $27,400 from individuals and political-action committees affiliated with the drug maker, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, making it his largest benefactor in this election cycle.

1. Candidates spar over prescription drugs
Another newspaper reports on the same confrontation.

Maryland Congressman Steny Hoyer, the second highest ranking Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives, was in the state Monday, stumping for Sullivan. He met with seniors Monday morning in Vernon and used the prescription drug issue as the backdrop for the Capitol press conference to support Sullivan's bid.

"That's just one initiative among many where Congress failed the people of the 2nd District," Hoyer said. "We believe that Jim Sullivan can win this election, and come to Washington and vote for the policies that are important to the people of the 2nd District."
