Athens Banner-Herald's Exec Editor puts the smack down on Sue Burmeister.
Winders: Time to stop playing politics with voting

You can do better than that, Sue.

Sure, you don't expect a state representative to say blacks only vote if they are paid to do so. You also don't expect one to say fewer minority voters means less fraud. You especially don't expect one to say both.

But as you know, that's how Rep. Sue Burmeister defended the state's voter ID law in front of Justice Department officials recently.
That little stunt landed her not only on the front page of this state's largest newspaper, but on front pages across the country as well.

So what's an Augusta Republican to do?

Well, she opts to spin damage control with FEMA-like incompetence and shift the blame: "While I do believe that voter fraud is rampant in our state, I in no way believe that African-Americans in my district or around the state only vote when they are paid to do so. If the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's misrepresentation has offended anyone, I apologize. However, I do not believe that these statements are accurate and they are in no way a reflection of my beliefs on this issue."

Blaming the media? Come on now, Sue. That's so 1992. Everyone tells me how sharp you are, so I know you can do better. Let's see, you've already blamed blacks for voter fraud. Maybe you could blame Hispanics for your poor choice of words. According to our early look at the state GOP playbook for 2006, undocumented Hispanics are the new black.

1. Winders writes good op-eds. This woman is the "Mean Jean" of GA.
The owners of the Athens Banner-Herald are conservative asshats from Augusta. However, they have some good columnists like Ed Tant (uber liberal activist) and good editors like Winders.

I am amazed at the amount of outright racism that has been expressed in public ever since Perdue was elected. It's as if the KKK & Dixiecrats have come out of hiding and hibernation and are speaking without fear of retribution or public outrage. :(

I hope you're doing OK. How are you feeling these days? Are you over the upset tummy phase? :hi:

2. I too can't believe the outright racism in public anymore
I fully expect them to hand out pick axes next November to drive the Dems away from the polls.

Tummy is doing ok now. Hit the second trimester yesterday and have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. I would like to get past the wanting to sleep all the time phase :)

I'm glad the Athens paper at least has some progressive people there. The Covington paper is owned by a total right-wing tool. The former editor was replaced shortly after offering me a column and the new one (who instituted a new Religion section) claims to not know anything about it and doesn't think the readers of the paper would want to hear my views. Every week now we're treated to editorials/articles from Dick Morris and Michael Reagan. :puke: And any editorial from anyone in the area surprisingly only has nice things to say about how Iraq is going or how Bush is doing. Go figure

3. Bummer. So you're not writing a column now?
Dick Morris and Michael Reagan? :puke: The ABH isn't that bad (yet.) Glad you're doing fine. We can't wait to greet the newest little RubyDuby in GA sometime in the new year!
