Questions about your state |
|
While driving through Georgia recently, I began to wonder:
(1) What is the purpose of the faux rock walls lining the roads, I think around Augusta? They seem odd.
(2) Driving past the ATL airport, I went under what was sort of like at tunnel (lit up), but it wasn't underground. What is the reason for that? Is the above area part of a runway or something?
Thanks :)

exactly correct, that's the newest runway.
I don't know about any rock walls along the road in Augusta, but in the Atlanta area there are retaining walls along the interstates where they had to put the roadway in the side of a hill (there's lot's of hills here). Also I've seen a few walls built near some neighborhoods to suppress the road noise. Don't know if that's what you saw or not.

I wonder if it's loud in the tunnel when a plane passes over? Hmm.
And the walls seem to be like fake rock looking things, maybe 15ft high, in panels about 10ft wide. They didn't seem to be blocking anything in particular; a lot of times I just saw trees behind them.

3. If you can remember where you saw the wall... |
|
maybe we can pull it up on google street view and take a look at it.
My guess is also probably a retaining wall or privacy / noise barrier.

4. Those walls are sound barriers made of recycled rubber. |

6. It would be kinda nice if they laid those horizontally so we can drive on them. |
