Ouch! 2 Honolulu FM stations sold to fundie Salem
they're the ones who, along with Cheap Channel, own most of our AM dial: KHNR 650, KGU 760, KHCR 940. Plus, when they bought KAIM 870, they took our only 50,000-watt AM station off the air so they could apply for a power increase for a station in Glendale! (KAIM is back, but at much reduced power.)

One of Honolulu radio's worst-kept secrets is now official. Pending federal approval, the four remaining radio stations belonging to New Wave Broadcasting LP have been sold to Maui-based Visionary Related Entertainment LLC for $11 million.

Visionary will buy KQMQ and KDDB and retain the stations' formats, while in order to meet federal ownership limits it is simultaneously selling KPOI and KHUI to California-based Salem Communications Corp. in a $3.7 million asset purchase....

T.J. Malievski, vice president and general manager for Salem Media of Hawaii Inc., would not divulge the company's plans.

Salem bills itself as the leading radio broadcaster focused on religious and family-themed programming.

:puke: :puke: :puke:

Why on Earth do the fundies own half of our broadcast spectrum? We undoubtedly have the lowest percentage of Christians of any state; in many areas, the Hongwanji Buddhist is at least as well established as First Baptist. Yet, besides Salem (and KLHT 1040) on the radio, there are no fewer than four Christian UHF stations here: channels 14, 26, and the newer 38 and 44. The latter two are on channels reserved for noncommercial educational programming, but Colin Powell's son at the FCC says that it's "educational" as long as they educate* me that I'm going to hell 'cause I hang out with all them lib'ruls and homos and fem'nists. </sarcasm>

1. There's a "rumor" that Visionary plans
to broadcast Air America Radio on one of their Honolulu AM stations... they want to broadcast AAR on their Maui AM channel, preferably right after the Rush show, but they are still negotiating prices and engineering concerns.

By engineering concerns, they are: 1) the time zone challenge, which possibly can be solved by "cherry picking", i.e. recording the shows they want and re-broadcasting them to fit their schedule, and 2) the timing of the commerical and news breaks into a standardized format, so the stations can program their local ads and breaks accordingly. This is a big deal because it may require additional staff to meet those requirements and that can get expensive.

It would be great if they work out a deal to broadcast AAR into the Honolulu market full time.. the Lingle/Gabbard cult would go crazy, don't ya think..? Let's hope this rumor comes true...

BTW, while I'm not sure of John Detz's (Prez of Visionary) personal politics, I firmly believe that he is one of the absolute best media minds in the State. JMPO....

2. Lingle/Gabbard cult? Details?
the Lingle/Gabbard cult would go crazy, don't ya think..?

Do you mean to imply that Her Imperial Highness is somehow involved with Science of Identity (the Hare Krishna offshoot that is the source of Gabbard's hateful spew)?! If so, why were we not made aware of this when it mattered, in 2002?

Bizarre Lingle sighting: The aforementioned Channel 14 runs incessant promos for a political show, "Connecting Point", hosted by former (R)legislator Bob McDermott, a self-described "Christian Patriot". Guess who is featured prominently in the promos????

That is correct. Remember, she (publicly) professes Judaism. Wonder what they think about this up at Temple Emanu-El? Hmmm?
