"Kaneohe marines died for freedom", please write to Memminger!

This is propaganda, please straighen him out!
excerpt:
Tuesday, February 1, 2005
Due to the peculiar acoustical properties involving large bodies of water, the
haunting sound of taps, played mournfully on a trumpet, travels at 10 o'clock
nightly from the Kaneohe Marine Base two miles across the still waters of
Kaneohe Bay and into my bedroom.
.....
A day after the tragedy, U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, the pathetic, bloated black
sheep of both the Kennedy family and America in general, had the audacity to
say in a speech, "U.S. military presence (in Iraq) has become part of the
problem, not part of the solution."
How different can two sounds be? The sound of taps made me sad. The
sound of Ted Kennedy made me sick.
...
Kennedy, whining that the American casualty rate is too high to justify us
being in Iraq, urged immediate withdrawal of American troops. He knows
something about immediate withdrawal in the face of casualties, having
shown his bravery by abandoning a young woman to drown in a car he drove
off a bridge in a little place called Chappaquiddick in 1969.

Please, please straighten this fella out! It would help to be polite but if you
can't muster it I understand . Thanks for your help . (3rd man on the left,
Charles Memminger.)

1. We need one of Hawaii's own Senators
to make a statement on the Deaths in Iraq and then this columnist can leave Kennedy's tragic past out of it.

9. He's leaning Dean but won't announce till it's over.
Might vote Fowler. It took him about 20 minutes to say that to the group...sigh
At least I gave him the DVD from the campaign.
Not an individual who values concision, one of Dean's great gifts. We have three others though!

3. How about both of them?
Here's Inouye's:

http://inouye.senate.gov/05pr/20050126pr02.html

"My heart goes out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in Iraq – whether by a single sniper bullet, a homemade bomb, or today, by the tragic crash of a Marine helicopter. Having served in combat, and especially having many friends who never made it back home, I am well aware of the grief and anguish that family members and friends are experiencing over the loss of their loved ones.

"This is indeed a difficult time. I hope all Americans will express, in their own way, their appreciation for these heroes whom we have just lost."

and Akaka's:

http://akaka.senate.gov/~akaka/releases/05/01/2005128A48.html

I was contacted by the United States Marine Corps this morning and informed that 27 of the 31 Marines tragically killed in last night's accident were from Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe. I am deeply saddened by this event - I am stunned that so many lives were lost in a single incident. My heartfelt thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies go to the families of each Marine.

We are particularly feeling the effects of the war in Hawaii. Our active duty forces from Schofield Barracks are scheduled to redeploy from Iraq following the elections next week. The 29th Separate Infantry Brigade, Hawaii's National Guard, is finishing its six-month training period at Fort Bliss, Texas, and is preparing to deploy to Iraq. In addition, we have Hawaii reservists from the 9th Regional Support Command (RSC) who have been serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. We've also had Marines from Kaneohe in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The families of service members on active duty, in the Reserves and in the National Guard in Hawaii are truly feeling the effects of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. As a member of the Armed Services Committee and the Ranking Member of Veterans' Affairs Committee, I am working hard to address the needs of our service members and their families, particularly as they return to Hawaii after serving their tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

P.S. I had no idea Memminger was such a fascist pile of garbage. Come to think of it, the guy who compared my own writing style to Memminger's was a conservoid, too...

4. Thanks, KamaAina!
Why limit ourselves to one Senator from Hawaii, indeed.

Thanks for these comments by the Democratic Senators from Hawaii.

I really didn't know that so many from Kaneohe were lost..so sad.

I wonder if bush the Liar will address the many deaths in Iraq in his sotu?

7. I wish those were my letters
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 01:15 PM by KamaAina
they are the official statements of Sens. Inouye and Akaka, respectively, taken from the relevant Senate web sites.

I'm not at all sure how to express the sentiment "fascist pile of garbage" in a format suitable for print in a public newspaper

Mmmmmm.... Kama-fu... perhaps instead of "Hi-yaa!", its disciples do the "Dean scream"? :-)

11. By popular demand...
no piles of fascist garbage, but...

Dear Mr. Memminger,

I’m so glad you stepped away from your accustomed role as a humor columnist to mark the passing of 27 Kane’ohe-based Marines and a sailor from Pearl Harbor. You see, the Bush Administration has had trouble making up its mind about who the enemy really is in Iraq. First it was Osama bin Laden, who may or may not have ever visited Iraq. Then it was Saddam Hussein, who may or may not have been running the whole show from a rathole buried beneath a remote shack in the Iraqi desert. Most recently it’s been Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who may or may not be connected to the aforementioned bin Laden but who certainly has built up a fearsome reputation in the corporate-owned U.S. media in a comparatively short time frame.

But now, thanks to your award-winning journalism, I am at last crystal-clear on where the real threat lies: Ted Kennedy. That’s right: all ominous present-day risks of terror aside, the real danger facing our great nation stems from an auto accident on a remote stretch of Massachusetts road in 1969. For that matter, I now know that Mary Jo Kopechne’s hair was blonde. Knowing this at long last, I may well sleep soundly tonight for the first time since I was five. By the way, what earthly difference could her hair color possibly make? And for that matter, since your intent was clearly to demonize one of America’s elder statesmen by invoking her tragic death, why did you not attempt to humanize her by using her name?

Really, Charlie, you should be wary of intruding on the journalistic (and I use the term loosely) turf of Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and so on. How would you feel if Limbaugh or O’Reilly attempted to write a humor column? I can just see it now: “Next on the Factor: Mopeds (or ‘mo-peds’): Convenient transportation, or a Chinese Communist plot to destroy the American auto industry?”

What’s with the hyphenated ‘mo-peds’, anyway? One would hope your readership would be bright enough to distinguish between a moped, or motor bike, and ‘moped’, that is, sat around and acted sad and miserable. Then again, ninety percent of them appear content with a ‘humor’ column that thinly disguises a partisan political attack on a close colleague of our own Senator – and decorated war veteran – Daniel K. Inouye, so maybe I shouldn’t be too quick to jump to conclusions.

And another edifying tidbit I just picked up: Ninety Americans are killed annually by ‘lightening’? Isn’t it a bit tactless to reveal this just on the eve of the Michael Jackson trial? Seriously, doesn’t your award-winning, and often quite readable, column deserve stronger copy editing than that? Although, come to think, that was the only humorous bit in the last two columns…

(KamaAina)

13. Did you see his response (in the GD: Politics thread)?
(KamaAina):

All I did was say some Hawaii troops didn't die in vain and point out that Ted Kennedy is a womanizing hypocrite and liar. He's never told the truth about Mary Jo.

But the reaction from people like you, foaming at the mouth, demanding my job, demanding I leave the country, etc is weirdly out of proportion to the column. I've never received so much hate mail in my career. Why would you stake your reputation and beliefs on someone like Teddy when you have someone actually honorable on your side like Howard Dean?

Get a grip. And maybe you should stop reading Honolulu Lite. Obviously, it brings you no pleasure so why do it?
CM

Huh? He wants me to stop reading his column? I don't believe I just read that! Note that at no time did I demand his job (works for me, though :-) ), demand he leave the country, or obviously, foam at the mouth (remember, we're a rabies-free state :-) ).

Oh, right. It's not me, it's "people like you". Next it'll be "those people". :puke:

14. Ya, I did, and he went from lame to ignorant to shithead in about 2 days.
Thanks so much for sending him your note. I wish now I had put more fire in mine. Next time...tomorrow. I seriously doubt he received 90% in support, in a population that is split 50/50, when people would much rather bitch that give thanks. Seriously doubt it and would love to prove him wrong.

10. Kama-san, fire might not be the most persuasive
tool to bring him to our point of view. In case you do write him.
I think he needs to hear loud and clear that propaganda isn't what we want.
Maybe a few licks of flame won't hurt. But I do want him to understand. He should really know better.
I can't let it go unchallenged.
