I'm thinking of moving... |
|
If you own a house in the District, what advice do you have?
I live in Arlington now and like it, but the house itself isn't right for me.
I'm going back and forth between moving to DC versus moving farther out so I can have a little more space and a little bigger yard.

1. Well, i'd place Dc as ground zero |
|
and then figure how far out I'd have to move to be safe
Only half kidding

2. Taken seriously, I can't move far enough out to be safe in the |
|
event of an attack. Commute is too long.

3. It all depends on what part of DC you're talking about. |

You should know that if you live here. The city changes from block to block.
On edit: Do you have a car? If so, can you get parking at work if you work in the District? As far as I can tell, there's no real benefit to living far outside the city if you're still restricted to the Metro. The property values don't really seem to go down far enough to justify it. Now, if you can stray away from the Metro, yeah, you're going to get a lot more bang for your buck moving out further.

4. I'm well aware of that. What I asked was an open question |

for anyone living there to tell me whatever she or he wanted to say about his/her own experiences. So, for example, if you live in the Eastern Market area, do you like it? Hate it? why? etc.
on edit in response to your edit: Yes I have a car and pay for parking near my office in the district (no metro stop near the office).

5. I lived in Glover Park, Tenley Town and Silver Spring. |
|
Glover is nice but expensive and very difficult to access public transportation. Tenleytown is alright... not much to do there, but you do have Metro. Silver Spring is good for me, but it's got a very financially mixed population due to its recent renaissance. I don't mind, but you might.
But if you can drive to work and you're talking about what you can get with your house... You're much better off going into the nearby spaces that aren't metro accessible (like Kensington or Rockville).

don't own though. DC is getting obscenely expensive. I just watched a burned out, yes burned out, facade of the townhouse around the corner go for $850,000. And I have crack dealers on the front stoop.
I love Shaw, I must say, although gentrification is changing it.
