aka a sculpture of Demeter.
I wrote an LTTE about the controversy over the statue. (I borrowed heavily from some of the posts at DU). A county board member called me last night and thanked me for the letter. He said it made him feel better about his decision to vote for the statue.
However, there have been several letter opposing the statue. You would not believe this! Here is one example:
Dear Editor,
On Feb. 21, the Ogle County Board voted to allow a statue of the Greek goddess Demeter to be placed on county property in front of the judicial center.
The artist who is creating the statue is reported to have stated that "She represents the personification of agriculture and fertility."
There are various reasons why many people find this objectionable.
The least of which is the fact that it was reported that the county will have to spend "nearly" $5,000.00 of taxpayers money in order to prepare a spot in front of the judicial center for the statue to be placed.
In addition to this, there are many people of faith who consider the placement of a goddess statue on public property as offensive and do not wish for it to become a public representation of their spiritual values.
Therefore, a petition drive has begun to collect signatures of Ogle County residents who also oppose this decision. To receive copies of the petition along with an explanation send an e-mail requesting the information to godrilla@accessus.net.

"the Grotto", this schlocky tourist trap in West Bend, IA, built by a Catholic priest to honor God. After seeing it, my mom said..."Hmm, so he was looking for ways to honor God, and he thought 'feed the poor? Clothe the naked? Visit those in prison?...No! I've got it!"
Feeding the poor is harder work than writing LTTEs. And it's possible no one will notice--but the poor.
