Kane County Elections Director a Felon -- Embezzled from Disabled Person
Clerk: Past not an issue

By PAUL DAILING
Kane County Chronicle

Before being hired in Kane County, Elections Director David Bruun served prison time for stealing from a disabled man's trust fund, court records show.

Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham acknowledged Wednesday that he knew his longtime friend's criminal history when he hired Bruun in 2004, while he still was on parole. His parole ended in December 2005.

Cunningham said Bruun's duties at the clerk's office include managing election workers and consulting election law. He does not deal with money.

"He has never concealed it from me. He has served his time. He paid his debt to society. It made no difference to me," Cunningham said. "I hired him, and actually, he started in the back room of the area, and I had an opening as a director, and I wanted someone with some legal experience, lawyer training."

Bruun is a former DuPage County Assistant State's Attorney!

2. I don't know the guy...
...but he must be off his rocker to believe citizens won't mind if a serial felon is entrusted with their votes.

So what if Bruun doesn't touch money. Our votes are infinitely more precious than gold.

4. Bruun is vulnerable...
...should any organization or corporation ask him to participate in fraud.

As you can read from the article, aside from being a serial felon, he is having serious financial trouble. This is a red flag whenever the FBI does a background check. When they investigate friends and neighbors of a job applicant or possible suspect, the first thing they look at is his/her money situation. They ask neighbors if they've noticed evidence of money problems and/or unusual spending. The FBI knows that anyone with money problems is more desperate.

Bruun is an easy target.

I agree that he deserves a second chance in life, that he's paid his debt to society. I just don't believe that second chance should involve a leading role in managing Dennnis Hastert's electoral process.
