October 28, 2007 - Illinois Senator Dick Durbin is introducing legislation that gets the federal government more involved in the fight against the drug resistant staph infection called MRSA.
Senator Durbin met with families affected by MRSA Sunday at Rush hospital. There have been an increasing number of infection cases in recent weeks involving Chicago area students.
In the coming week, Durbin plans to introduce a bill that would authorize more funding for research and create new public awareness campaigns.
"Nineteen thousand deaths from MRSA in America. Let's put it into perspective. That's more than the number of people who died in America from HIV in any given year, more than those who were killed in homicides, more than those who died from emphysema or from Parkinson's. This is certainly worth our attention, and I hope this legislation can come up in the senate soon," Durbin said.
Doctors say MRSA is alarming because it is moving beyond hospitals and being acquired in the community. Regular hand-washing is effective in stopping it.
