Report on the reading of 3000 names of American Military Dead
Subject: Report on the reading of 3000 names of American Military Dead
Date: Monday, January 01, 2007 12:13:59 PM

Last night, New Year’s Eve 2006, several people associated with Veterans for Peace, Inc., Chapter 49, Indianapolis and their supporters held a vigil on the south steps of Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis and read the names of the 3000 Americans that have been sacrified to the Bush Administration’s illegal, immoral war of aggression against a sovereign nation that posed no threat to us. All that took part in the event were moved at very deep and spiritual level. It is a difficult task to remember and honor the dead. And when you read page after page of names of young people that have been sacrificed on the altar of Bush’s death machine, it tears at your soul.

There were many passersby that stopped to listen to the reading or to inquire as to what we were doing. Many, many, many thanked us for our efforts. But there were a few (a mere handful) that were critical of what we were doing. One dead above the neck right-winger told me we were stupid to be honoring the dead. I’ll withhold my response. Another asked if I remembered 9-11. I asked him what Iraq had to do with that. He asked if I were serious. Then proceeded to tell me Iraq was involved with 9-11. I told hi his President said Iraq had nothing to do with it. The he asked again if I remembered 9-11. At that point I told him to go away. Where the hell do these people get their information? I have a theory that they are so guilt ridden and aware of their mistake in supporting this war that they are in denial of their own culpability in the deaths of 3000 Americans and over 650, 000 Iraqis that they will use ant irrational, illogical justification for continuing their support. The right-wing is always harping on taking personal responsibility for one’s actions but they will not ever take responsibility for their own.

Unfortunately we were unable to get through all the names. We were reading the names of those that had been killed in November of 2005 when the Peace Walkers arrived at 11:15 PM for their planned and permitted event. They asked us to stop our event so they could conduct their own and we graciously agreed. We wrapped up with reading the names of the last ten people to be killed in Iraq and departed the scene.

To all those that took part through out the evening, thanks you very much and continue to work for peace throughout 2007.

Wednesday at 11:30 AM in front of the offices of Senators Lugar and Bayh there will be a reading of the names of the Indiana dead, with a tolling of the bell for each person lost. Please if you are able to attend this action be there.

And lastly please remember the killing continues in Iraq and will only accelerate from this point forward and it will really pick up speed when Bush starts to escalate the war with the introduction of upwards of 50, 000 more troops. I still would like to do a flag action, this time to mark 3500 when that number is reached. At the current rate of dying the math says that will occur July 22, 2007. But at the way the numbers are accelerating I would predict that we’ll be out there planting flags on Memorial Day. So please consider sponsoring a flag and remember that Veterans for Peace, Inc is a 501-C-3 organization which makes all your donations tax exempt. It is only five dollars to sponsor a flag (of course you can sponsor more than one). So please, please support this action and send your checks to:
