Potential pitfalls ? (other than the fact that he's still a Republican)
Now if we could get a Dem to run up here, and give them a fighting chance ... we'd be making progress.

Former Marion Co. Coroner Announces Congressional Run

Feb 20, 2007 01:16 PM EST

INDIANAPOLIS - In a surprise move, the former Marion County Coroner announced he is running for Congress. Dr. John McGoff made that announcement Tuesday at the Statehouse.

McGoff said he would be addressing speculation that he would be running against Bart Peterson for mayor, but he used the chance to announce he is running for Congress in the 5th District and wants to unseat Dan Burton in the May 2008 primary. He said he wants to restore integrity to that seat and bring people in the 5th District a presence in Congress that really listens.

He has worked as an emergency room doctor, but has been very involved in Republican politics in the area for the last 20 years and said after exploring the idea of running against Bart Peterson for mayor, he thought Congress would be a better fit.

"When I started talking to folks, they said that they really wanted to restore integrity in Washington and I heard far more about that then I did about the mayor's race. It was a natural fit with my background to run for Congress," McGoff said.

1. (Fmr) Coronor vs the Watermelon man
the jokes are just too juicy. I know nothing about this guy - but it would be a) great to get Burton out of Congress; and b) it would open a door to a serious democratic candidate challenge for the seat.

2. I worked with one of the candidates
for the democratic nomination in the 5th last cycle. The party insiders are tired of Carr and backed Huntington attorney Clements on the party slate.

My guy got outspent 20 to one by both Clements and Carr and finished a strong third. If he could raise a little money he'd do well. (Having said that, no one in the field last time had a snowball's chance in hell to unseat Burton, even with all of his baggage.) Burton spent more at Purgatory, a golf course north of Noblesville, entertaining donors in 04 that Carr raised in the same cycle.
