1. Here's one that's not posted, but I like its oddness
Edited on Mon Jun-16-08 02:02 PM by CornField

This bowl, a piece of breakable China, was deposited unharmed from parts unknown to the sidewalk in front of the Cedar Rapids transportation center (1st St. SE, near the public library). It sits on a bed of soot and sand.

2. Hubby and I were thinking about
retiring to Iowa, actually Cedar Rapids was top on our short list. How bad was the flooding? Can we find an area map with the flooded areas. Will the RE agents let us know? How bad was the flood in the early 90's? We live in Houston and deal with more than our share of this.

3. The flooding was extensive in and around the river.
I'm not sure if they've made an aerial map available yet on the internet -- there are hard copies at the emergency management office, etc. Basically the flood went 4-5 blocks further than the line for the 500-year flood plain. If you buy outside of that area, you should be okay.

As for a realtor telling you... I don't know. I'd like to think that such information would be disclosed, but you never know. Also, my best guess is that most of the homes that were fully flooded (above the first floors) will be complete losses and will need to be destroyed.

If you give the emergency people in town a week or so, I'm sure they'll make a flood map available. Right now, it just isn't a priority.

4. Thanks for the advice...
I certainly wouldn't expect them to drop everything and answer my question....which is why I am going this route for now. Believe me....it will be a while before they recover...take it from one who knows.

5. I'm sorry if that came across as snippy
I didn't intend it that way. Between trying to cover the floods as a news item, working to keep my own basement dry and also volunteering where I can, I'm just extremely tired.
