How's everyone faring in the winter storm?
We're just north of Des Moines, and we've got a steady stream of ice pellets coming down.

It's not sticking like a typical ice storm. We can see these little bits of ice sliding off of
our roof and into piles on our walk way. I'm not sure if this will be as bad as a typical
ice storm, but the night is still young.

I hear we're supposed to get thunderstorms in the middle of all of this, while it's 23 degrees.

That should be wild.

Check in Iowans and others across the Midwest to give us a weather report and to let us know
how you're doing.

1. It's a mess in Iowa City
I just finished walking outside, and there is a LOT of sleet. It is making the roads (and sidewalks) slick. Fortunately I don't have a lot of responsiblity left (finals week is done!), so I can take my time walking.

2. Well I look out onto US Hwy. 6 from my window as I type
and I can't remember the last time I saw a car go by. This is usually a very busy street all night.
I was outside working until about 7. Just after I came in my neighbor came over to return my gloves. She said it was getting bad.
My kids in Indiana and Illinois are safe, but I am worried about them going to work tomorrow.

4. I'm in the far NE corner...
the huge band of precip is just starting to enter Allamakee county. As of now (11:46pm) it hasn't started to snow yet at my house, but it should be starting imminently, according to the radar. We won't be getting any of the sleet or freezing rain here (thank God!!) but are predicted to receive 7-12" of snow. I'm curious to see if that will actually pan out. Looking at the radar, I'm just not sure. I'm about 99% sure the kids won't have school tomorrow, but I'm worried about my hubby getting out of here in the morning for his 5 mile jaunt to work. He also has an appointment in La Crosse at 3:00 so I hope things improve by then.

The weekend sounds just lovely as well. A few more inches on Sat. night and Sunday, along with arctic temps and wind to blow all this white stuff around. Peachy. Another round possible on Tuesday! Geez!!

Forecast for Christmas day though? Mostly sunny with a high of 21. Woohoo! (Of course, it's still several days out so a lot can change between now and then!)

Stay safe, Everyone!! I hope that ice doesn't end up amounting to what they are saying! Yikes. I hate ice storms. I'll take a foot of snow over an ice storm any day!

5. I'm staying in the Quad Cities
I work several days a week in the Quad Cities. I'm staying in the Quad Cities right now because of the weather rather than trying to make it home. I'm staying over at the Isle of Capri - in the new building. It's nice because it's close to where I'm working and they have a parking ramp here, so that should help keep most of the snow and ice off the vehicle.

10. And looks like we have a blizzard coming in tomorrow screaming out of Nebraska and Dakotas..
I tried to go to work today, after my husband got me dug out. I am home early. It is beyond messy and slippery and just plain old nasty.

8. Post-storm check-in...
We ended up with between 7 & 8 inches.

Bracing for the next round coming in tomorrow which sounds just nasty - rapidly falling temps, dangerous wind chills, snow, and strong winds. Sounds toasty, doesn't it? Don't even want to think about the one that's supposed to come in on Tuesday!! Ready for a break in this pattern!

9. Hey all - we got 8.5 inches by 5:30 this morning
don't know what the total was.

Just snow here - lots and lots of it

Now it is warm (low 20s) and beautiful outside.

Wish we didn't have to be at work so we could go play in the snow!

Hope everyone is safe and warm!!

11. Hey everyone...
Sounds like many in Iowa did get the forecasted 6-10 inches. Sometimes we get these
dire warnings and next-to-nothing happens. In any case, I'm glad everyone is safe!

My kids has school canceled today (Des Moines). The snow is really different. I tried
to shovel the driveway today, and the snow is so stiff, like concrete! My kids were walking
on our neighbor's snow, and they were walking on top of it, without leaving footprints!
This stuff is really hard.

We're supposed to travel from DSM to Dubuque tomorrow (Sat). I'm thinking we probably won't
go. We're only supposed to get an inch or two of snow, which doesn't sound that bad. However,
the winds could create a big mess. I guess we'll see what tomorrow brings.

I don't think Santa will have a problem getting his sleigh through Iowa this year!

Stay warm everyone. :)

13. My Dogs are just LOVING it!!
Of course, for Siberian Huskies, this is their time of the year. They're outside playing, and chasing each other, just having a good time. They come in and eat and want to go right back out.

Me, I just take my time getting where I have to go, and make sure the windshield is cleaned off.

Just west of Des Moines, we got a little bit of ice, then some sleet, some snow, and then more sleet on top of it, so its nice and crusty, hard to walk in, hard to drive in: it makes it a lot easier to decide to stay inside.

16. I'm going to try to finish the Gore Vidal book and also will
watch these CSI DVD's I've not yet seen. I am working on a murder mystery so I need some tips on how to write and how NOT to write such things. So was going to stay inside anyway.

18. Putin is rearing his head over Iowa airspace
and chuckling at this phenomenon. I wish we could invoke perestroika or whatever it was and let him take most of it back with him.
