Here's a tip: NEVER go to a Steve King town hall meeting,
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 04:04 PM by progressoid
Why oh why did I do that? An hour and a half in a room room with King and his mindless supporters.
AAAARRRRRGGH! I'm going to need three Ibuprofen.

Every time he grunted out a talking point, the gathered drones would mindlessly nod their heads in agreement.
It was creepy. Even creepier were the dozen or so students forced to attend and be indoctrinated.

I won't subject you to his usual hyperbole, distortion, & outright lies. But there was one thing that made my jaw drop (well, only figuratively drop, since I could barely unclench my jaw).
When the the recent IA Supreme Court decision came up, here's how he described Pat Murphy, "curly haired, red headed, Irish Catholic from the Dubuque diocese...for gay marriage! I mean for it! Um, and what does he say to his Archbishop? I guess God only knows."

I think even some of his automatons were a little surprised by that.

ETA: By the way, that is an exact quote. I tape recorded it. Maybe if I feel better after the painkillers, I review the rest for some more choice quotes.

1. And Steve King would be totally baffled by the concept that a political figure
could keep his religious beliefs as part of his personal life, and serve the welfare of the citizens by supporting legislation in the public interest. No Archbishop of anywhere has any business sticking his nose into legislative matters or interfering with political decisions.

Understanding that would be way beyond our Steve.

Did he update his quote on what PERCENTAGE of illegal immigrant Mexican women are pregnant when they sneak in over the border? That's one of my favorite Steve King lines from one of his Des Moines Register articles. You get the feeling all-seeing Steve can tell which women are pregnant before they know themselves.

Looking forward to more quotes -- You are a brave soul, and I salute you.

8. He didn't use that quote but did pull some other numbers out of his @$$.
When trying to explain away global climate change he said there are four times more polar bears now.
Huh? Four times more what? Four times more than Florida?
I'm guessing his "team" found something on a blog linked to another blog linked to a refuted study and expanded on it.

I haven't had time to re-listen to the tape for other tidbits. Maybe next week if I can stomach it.

2. Thanks for taking one for the team.
As to Mr. Murphy, Mr. King - his religious life is his personal matter, not yours, not the State's.

3. here is a diary from Kos about a rabid audience

I futilely tried to follow the Fox News nightmare of talking-points, but that soon became pointless. The uncontrolled "meeting" was unfolding with the clarity of a hallucinogenic collage scene from a cheap 50's lost-weekend type of drunken jag B movie, and featured several slow-motion duels of point-counterpoint within the confines of individual propaganda-crocked brains.

9. That's it exactly!
I think there were a few in this group that were actually more extreme than King (at least publicly). King might agree with them but held back because of the cameras and media.

Damn, I'm getting another headache just recalling it. :banghead:

10. I rewarded myself with a couple gin and tonics.
I guess not so much a reward, more like a necessity.

6. "Any kind of sexuality is a behavior, and it's not immutable."
Steve King just said that (Thurs morn 16 Apr) on Iowa Public Radio while being interviewed after rallying somewhere with Huckabee.

So Our Steve must figure gays can be socially forced to mutate their behavior and become un-gay??? Perhaps if we continue to bludgeon them socially, all the gays will change their minds and un-gay themselves. What else could King mean?

If I pray real real hard, perhaps the day will come when Our Steve will decide to mutate his own behavior and try being gay for awhile. Just for a little while. And we'll get to see how much he enjoys being treated like an outcast.

A man phoned in to thank him, because "It says in the Bible that marriage is one man and one woman and one race."

Funny -- I don't remember that in my old Bible. Guess I'll have to go back and look.

12. Ugh.
I'm afraid some will do more than bludgeon them socially.
Our local officals are bracing for trouble. Let's hope they are just being cautious and nothing bad happens.

http://southwestiowanews.com/articles/2009/04/15/council_bluffs/doc49e602eb72ba0867089296.txt

Pottawattamie County Supervisor chairman Roger Williams and Supervisor Loren Knauss met with County Recorder John Sciortino, Building and Grounds director Jim Yochum, safety coordinator Brad Dumke and head courthouse security deputy Sgt. Doug Arrick, to discuss safety on April 27.

“My biggest concern is that we have the resources to respond to anything that happens,” Knauss said. “The No. 1 issue is to get crowds to the right places and keep fire exits free and clear.”

Knauss said that he did not foresee any problems on April 27, but “ample” security will be on every floor of the courthouse.

“By next week we should have a complete plan from the entrances to the fourth floor,” Knauss said. “It’s not that complex, just common sense. We are trying to make sure it will be orderly.”

Yes, everyone knows that people trying to get married are likely to be packing molotov cocktails inside their bouquets and they'll probably clog up intersections standing on folding chairs giving political speeches, they'll probably try to climb up on the courthouse roof with bullhorns, advocating murder and mayhem and treason.

All engaged/marrying couples I know are like that. That's just the way love is, isn't it??? :silly:

How wonderful that Our Steve already knows that ninety-five percent of the marrying couples will be from out of state!!!

I wonder if he holds his breath until he hallucinates, or reads owl entrails, or exactly how he comes up with his numbers.

I hadn't seen the polar bear population assertion. That's even better than the percentage of pregnant Mexican women. He never ceases to amaze.
