Donald Kaul Nails it again!!!!
For those of you old enough to remember Over The Coffee, in the Des Moines Register years ago, Donald Kaul is still writing. And, he's his usual smart-aleck self...but almost always right on target. He did it again!!!

<snip>
"(I’ve known Sen. Grassley ever since he was the youngest member of the Iowa Legislature and I always thought he was smarter than he looked. I was wrong.) "
THE GREAT MERGER: REPUBLICANS AND LOBBYISTS – by Donald Kaul

For those of you who don't remember him, he was a regular columnist when the Register was a good paper. He and John Karras worked together to start what has become a tradition--The Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa.

1. The Register was a good paper before Gannett ruined it
and Kaul was someone I always read (and went to hear on various occasions).
DMR went down the tubes about 1989.

2. A friend made my day a few years ago finding Kaul on the web.
The day I read the Register editorial stating they were going to concentrate on the "GOLDEN CIRCLE" ended any cash flow from my "brown around" checking account.

3. I wrote to Geneva Overholser (then an editor of the DMR)
and quoted the poem about those who would "draw a circle to
shut me out." I then quoted the rest of the poem, "But Love and I
had the wit to win./We drew a circle to take them in."
