Update on Marriage amendment *new info*
Hi! I have been working on this issue peripherally but today was in the campaign headquarters making calls all afternoon. I was able to talk to the staff and the campaign managers during the afternoon. I posted a few days ago about the latest poll info that had us running neck and neck and some of you wanted to know who did the poll. It was apparently done 3 weeks ago by a media group in Wichita so it was not a partisan poll. The word is that we are still very close, expect a new poll tomorrow or Monday with some interesting endorsements to come if we are still doing well.

The staff feel very good about our chances. I am excited so anyone with any extra time to kill give them a call and do some phone banking of possible. Only a few more days, let's win this one too.

Anyone who followed the Tiffany Muller campaign at all here in Topeka (she ran against Jael Phelps in the primary) would be interested to note that she is also doing well. This is where I have been working mostly and we are hoping for a good outcome there as well.

1. I had to leave this thread and come back.
KANSAS? :wow:

If this is happening there, then maybe it is time to start reconsidering the depth of support the mouthbreathers say they have for their crap. I would have thought that in Kansas, anything even remotely progressive would be a far tougher sell.

2. Ain't it great???
It hasn't gotten this close without a TON of work by lots of us out here in mouthbreather land. We beat Phelps and we are close enough with this to at least send a message even if we don't win but we ARE going to win (fingers crossed, breath held, scheduling more hours of phone banking and selling my soul to the devil).

4. Hey MuseRider -- Can You Write A Short News Story On This?
I can run it on the new World News Trust site and we can run it through DU LBN. It would help bring some attention to the issues involved and the present situation in Kansas. If you're interested, e-mail me at worldnewstrust@yahoo.com Chrs

6. Sweet! I made some calls today too, and got mostly very good
response (apart from one man who was appalled that his wife was on our list :wow: ). I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed ... ;)

7. Good for you!
I was thinking about you today and wondering if you had gotten hooked up with the phone banks. I had a difficult time getting anyone on the phone since it was such a nice day but only had a few bad calls. Boy those bad calls can be real winners can't they? This issue is really bad for some of those folks. BTW, have you seen the posters? They are fabulous.

8. And you missed the opportunity to tell him ...
"So I guess your wife hasn't told you about her girlfriend yet?"

He would probably swallowed his tongue and died right there on the spot and that would have been one less voter to worry about.

9. This is seriously good news!
I was talking to some of the folks involved in the effort in Kansas the other night at our LGBT Democratic club meeting on the Missouri side and they said the polling was showing a close race.

It makes me wonder if all the "fundie fervor" that surrounded the Terry Schiavo case was scaring more mainstream, middle of the road voters away from the issue. If Kansas can defeat the amendment, I'm hoping it will help turn the tide on the issue in other states.

10. I hope you guys aren't blindsided
like we were here in misery last year. The opposition can be very sneaky and quiet, they emptied out the hate factories here last year and enjoyed the sense of power so much they did the same thing in November.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for everyone over there, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

many followers to the polls.

13. Me too, me too.
It is frightening. We won the last time but that was local and a lot of work. This statewide issue is much more difficult. I am also not holding my breath, no matter what the polls say. If we lose and it is close it will say something but it won't be enough. I can't remember ever being this upset over something other than Bush**.

I doubt the ban loses but if it comes close, maybe that's all we can hope for at this point

16. My deep dark red parents are voting NO...
just thought you all would like to know that there are still some moderate repubs out there who don't like discrimination. My die-hard repub mother is even considering voting blue in the next presidential election because she is so disgusted with the pubs for the Schiavo thing, the gay bashing and social security (yep, already looking forward to a new administration). Yea! Believe me, if she can be swayed, anyone can. I know that if there was more campaigning done in KS this year, she would have voted Kerry. She said she didn't like Bush, but didn't really know much about Kerry's stand on terrorism (there were so many negative ads about his service record, etc. that she bought into it). She (and quite a few other reds I talked to) also said that if they (dems) didn't care enough about rural voters to talk to them about their issues, then they wouldn't fight for rural issues in the govt. Just a thought. Sorry for the tangent!

BTW, I was the first vote in my district today! So, we were 100% NO for about 30 sec.!!! :)

17. I have been saying that
for years. We are totally ignored but then we do not have a lot of votes. Still, it would create a momentum. Tell your parents thank you, and thank you to you too. I just voted and am having a bad case of upset stomach today. I think I will go to the watch party so I can be with my friends tonight, I just don't want to be caught on camera sobbing if we lose. It really looked good for us for a while.

18. Are you feeling OK today?
I just checked my county results (Jefferson County), and the "yes" vote was 75-25. I expected it, but hope springs eternal.

BTW, I am just up the road; hi!

19. Well hello neighbor!
Feeling about as good as one can possibly feel after such a defeat. You? We were killed and did not even suspect it. I saw the polls from Wichita and started to wonder about the one I got from the campaign itself but the campaign people said theirs was more accurate. It makes you wonder.

Did you see the thread above about the KC Du meetup? Check it out I am going, I hope, for the first time. It will be nice since Kansas Duers are kind of few and far between. :hi:

20. I guess I've reached the point (that "certain age")......
where I accept the world as it is.

When I talked about the amendment, I emphasized the assault on every Kansan's civil liberties. That made the most sense to me, when talking to people who had no personal stake in the issue of same-sex marriage. I even called Talk Radio 710 one morning, but was dropped off hold for a news break. The station changed topics after the break, so I was out of luck.

I thought it was closer to 50/50 statewide, until I saw the results yesterday. I was not surprised that Jefferson County went "yes" in a big way, though.

Once I have fought the good fight, and exerted all the influence I can with those around me, then I have to concentrate on the people in my family (nuclear, extended, and spiritual). It's time to care for the tribe, and not the whole world.

I bet they're doing the Snoopy dance over at Phred Phelps' (ptooey) house, though.

I read the meetup thread just now. I don't know if I can make it on the 20th- I am in the middle of a job change (going from a law firm in St. Joseph to a great new job in downtown Topeka), and that first Wednesday evening may be tough. I'll try, though. Westport Flea Market is a good place to meet.

21. So you will be in Topeka.
Cool. We could meet up there sometime if you would like. The only other DUer I have ever met is my son and he mostly lurks.

I guess for me this issue is really personal. Many dear friends and a family member have suffered long enough. I have chosen this issue or it had chosen me I guess and it really has given me a center, helped me with the contiuous assault from all sides. I have become focused and it is good for me as well as good for the community of man to have some of us really ready to focus on something so this is my thing.

If you find that you can go and you want to go let me know. If you are in Topeka that day we could go together. I would be happy to drive if you don't mind a muddy, farm pick up truck.

I love preachers who have learned that sometimes you can't turn the other cheek!
