1. Won't be up for 20 or 30 days on the St. John. |

Here on the coast they are rare. Last good feed I had I picked May 29 a few years ago on the St. John. Shared a bucket full with several other canoeists at the end of a hundred miles on the river after putting in at Baker Lake. Some of them had never heard of Fiddleheads and others, who had never had them fresh, hated them! Much to their surprise, everyone loved them and I barely got a taste.
The afore mentioned "good feed" was the vicarious satisfaction of sharing with my fellow travelers and in many ways better than a full belly.

they'll come fast now. all the restaurants in Caribou use to stick signs in their windows fresh fiddle heads. I like them but never cared for dandelions. they were a staple in our house growing up. Dad always picked fiddle heads in season when he took me brook fishing. I still get a mess in some of the same places. j-pak the salmon were rolling off the end of my dock last night. no black flies yet.still snow in places along the camp road. turkey hunting tommorrow. gonna hold out for a big one -have seen 3 in different areas that I would like to take with a bow! lots of birds just got to get a big one to come close.

I read where one party caught and released 20 salmon on sebago. they were using sewed bait. taking pictures of fish. probably half of them will develope fungus and die. I mean why do we as a people have to always overdo? catch and release your limit if you want to but leave the rest alone for another day or another fisherman. we want salmon to make a come back all over maine. I use 3 colors,a dodger and streamer. I use an 8'leader to the dodger and 12" leader to fly. I perfer single hook streamer size #6 hook. this time of year I perfer flat water early morning so I can see fish activity. most productive time of year on my lake is may 20th -june 7th. try a gold muddler!
