DEMS ANNOUNCE 2008 ELECTION THEME:
"CHANGE STARTS WITH ME IN MAINE"
Slogan is part of Maine Democratic Party's redesign that includes new web site, new logo and a new approach to victory
The Maine Democratic Party's (MDP) campaign organization, Victory 2008, unveiled its new look yesterday-a redesigned logo, web site and campaign slogan to dovetail with the new, unprecedented campaign organization it has built to capture the spirit of change Democrats are working for in November.
The slogan: Change starts with me in Maine! The logo: a bright blue and muted green, "Maine Dɘmocratic Party." "The 'e' is deliberately backwards to draw attention to the fact that change quite literally begins with each and every one of us, with me and with you, right here in Maine," said Peter Chandler, Campaign Director for Victory 2008.
"The road to change goes through Maine," he said. "Without the "me" in each of us, change is not possible. Without Maine, progress in Washington is not likely. From the force Maine already has exerted in the presidential nominating process, to the potential we have to win a voting majority in the U.S. Senate by taking action in that race, all eyes are on Maine this year. We wanted to reflect that power with our words and the image we use to define ourselves."
Chandler said he knew the campaign would be printing various brochures, bumper stickers and other collateral for the election, so it was the perfect time to replace the previous MDP logo with something that reflected the organizational changes he has been implementing.
This year, with 38 staffers on board across the state, the Victory 2008 Coordinated Campaign already has a far larger staff than at the conclusion of both the 2006 or 2004 cycles. Chandler said he expects to open at least one office in every county by the end of June. "We've already opened 14 offices statewide, and it's still only May."
Other noteworthy stats to date:
Last week alone, the MDP Coordinated Campaign made 25,000 phone calls to Democrat and Independent Voters and expects to match that total this week in only three working days (with the Memorial Day holiday and State Convention).
650 Mainers already have volunteered for the campaign, either by making phone calls or by door-to-door canvassing.
The new logo was created by Portland-based Lapchick Creative. Jodie Lapchick, Chief Creative Officer, said her firm examined the logos of all 50 state parties as a launching pad for thinking about what it means to be a Democrat in Maine in 2008, and how best to reflect that in a graphically designed brand.
"I was well aware of the excitement building around this year's election on the national level, but when I heard what the Maine Democrats are doing on the grassroots level I started envisioning a 'look' that would reflect that sense of possibility," Lapchick said. "With so many Mainers of all ages getting involved in politics-many of them for the first time in their lives-I knew we needed to capture that.
"The Maine Democratic Party is leading the country in terms of its level of organization this early, and now they're leading in terms of brand identity as well," she said.
The logo and slogan will be highly visible at the Maine Democratic Party's State Convention, which takes place this weekend at the Augusta Civic Center. More details on the convention can be found on the party's new web site: www.mainedems.org.
At least 3,000 people are expected to attend the convention-very high compared to past years' attendance. Other changes in store include a Youth Rally, a chem-free reception for under 21-year-olds on Friday night that will take place in one of the event's eight hospitality suites. The event is geared toward the 288 locally elected delegates under the age of 21, as well as any young convention attendees and guests.
Overall, the 'youth movement' this year has been substantial. Chandler said at least 270 individuals under age 25 have expressed interest in volunteering; and the party also has hired two Youth Coordinators (one for each congressional district) to reach out to young people-whether through democracy-themed, mural-painting days in various campaign offices across the state, or through traditional campus events, volunteerism and internships. Much of this outreach is taking place using the online forum, Facebook.
