BROCKTON —

A gas line struck during an excavation Wednesday afternoon led to the evacuation of more than a dozen buildings on the north side of the city, a fire department official said.

A backhoe being operated in the rear of a factory at 53 Spark St. accidentally hit the gas line at about 3 p.m., said Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Murphy.

The ruptured 2-inch line released high-pressure gas into the neighborhood, forcing the evacuation of most of Spark and Intervale streets, Murphy said.

The streets — part of the section of the city known as the Lithuanian Village — were to the north and northeast of the leak, where the wind was blowing the gas, Murphy said.
