ROCKLAND —

<snip>

Both Zupkofska and fellow Selectman James Simpson were unseated Saturday in the annual town election.

Topping the selectmen’s race with 1,409 votes was businessman William Minahan, who has served on the finance committee. Joining Minahan on the board will be Edward Kimball, a union-trained carpenter and president of Boston Builders Inc. He got 1,151 votes, Zupkofska got 1,048, and Simpson was last with 962.

Simpson said his disagreements with local unions played a role in his defeat.

“Because I didn’t play ball with the unions, I was voted out,” he said. “For three years we did a good job and didn’t lay anyone off. I wish the next board and the town the best.”

The district attorney said later that selectmen and a search committee had each violated the state Open Meeting Law on separate occasions in connection with the matter.
