The Unemployment Agency phone lines were overloaded all last week, the Michigan Works outposts were swamped with recertifications and resume updates... What that tells me is that the 8.5% figure was a bit off... since they fail to keep track of those who have run out their benefits (until extension time).
Now that they are learning the truth from all the emergency unemployment extension apps---I wish they'd tell us--. I think 11% is very realistic...
Yup, Michigan is #1 in the nation...

According to Republican economist Kevin Phillips, the real unemployment and inflation rates are much higher than the government is reporting, around 12%. http://www.mindfully.org/Reform/2008/Pollyanna-Creep-Economy1may08.htm
