I'm sad to see that but if there is one thing that can be learned by the civil rights movement of the past 50 years, THE FIGHT CONTINUES.

Like Ted Kennedy said in 1980 "The works goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die." This isn't the end of Affirmative Action in Michigan especially if the state congress turns blue and with Granholm getting re-elected.

Tonight, my 7-year-old son (a born liberal who is terribly interested in politics) was saying, "Mom, this is like voting for slavery again, isn't it?" I was trying to explain it and correct him, but you know what, he's right: there are many ways to be enslaved. He'll be heartbroken in the morning, but I'll tell him what you said. It's a bitter pill tonight, but it's not the end.

It is a bitter pill to swallow but Deval Patrick won tonight, Bob Menendez won tonight, Nancy Pelosi will be the first female Speaker of the House, and the number of women grew in the senate tonight. Democrats are truly the party of America. Every race, every gender, every religion, every way of life.

Michigan did take one step back tonight but America has taken a huge leap forward.

I'm just becoming an Ohio resident because it's basically the same as getting a $12,000/yr scholarship. I heard that Ohio ranks 49th of 50 in terms of college affordability. Blech.

But, the fact that it's now a BLUE state makes it that much easier to stomach.

15. Terrible--This was my Biggest Disappointment

On a night with so much wonderful excitement, a huge wave of real Democrats winning, and my real country coming back, this was my biggest shock and sadness. Next, people are going to have to work to get rid of this thing, work around it, and I hope, prove that it was un-Constitutional, bring a case, and get it thrown out, if possible. The only thing I wish the campaign to vote No on 2 had done more of, is do ads showing all the different kinds of Affirmative Action laws and programs there are, and how we all benefit as a modern civilized society. The argument was not made clearly enough--from laws requiring wheelchair access to school programs to get girls more interested in math and science, from scholarships for poor inner city black students to battered women's (gender-specific) shelters, from laws that make firing someone for being "too old" illegal to preferences for veterans of war when awarding Government contracts, we all benefit from Affirmative Action laws that fight discrimination. This filth has to be struck down, and do it by making people appreciate what these laws and programs are for.

18. I hope that people committed to diversity can find a way around this

Whether it's using income or something else. It won't be the same, but I gotta believe that the smart people at places like U-M that are committed to these principles will find some creative way to enhance diversity in spite of this setback.

If there is any silver lining maybe it's that there is no symbolic state policy for resentful petty bourgeois whites to target their racial animosities at anymore, and so called "liberal" political leaders cannot just point to their support for affirmative action as evidence of their committment to equality. In many ways affirmative action was a symbolic action. I still wish it was there because it has really helped some people, but maybe it's passing will allow us to rethink this problem of equality and come up with some creative, progressive solutions to patterns of inequality. The denial phase that ridiculously thinks that everything is equal now can only last so long.
