Patti Smith/Ted Nugent fight on WABX
Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 05:21 AM by lettre de cachet
I was wondering if anyone here knew anything about a Patti Smith/Ted Nugent fight that supposedly happened on WABX in Detroit. Was it physical?

I never knew that. WABX is a little before my time. Good for her. Guess Ted was babbling too long on the radio. Big surprise, huh?

"Oh so many flashbacks. How about working at WABX circa 1979 (MD, Asst PD) and watching Patti Smith punch Ted Nugent right in his chest for taking too much time during his interview since she was scheduled next."

2. I remember the story well.

I remember that idiotpath Nuge bragging about how he put "Double Live Gonzo" stickers all over Patti's limo or what vehicle (can't quite recall).

WABX: Wow, remember Steve Dahl and his characters Travis, Baba Gee and Thumbs? He went to Chicago after getting kicked out of Detroit and I listened to him while going to college there from 83-85/

6. Funtime

WABX got knocked a bit among my peers for playing "weird" music. I loved them for it.

Around '84 I recorded Blondie doing Iggy's "Funtime" off of WABX. It was a better recording than the one on the Picture This Live CD. The one ABX played had louder synthesizers, and you could hear the boys yelling "Fun" and growling insanely. I really regret not making more copies of it. A female DJ played it and then played "Sunday Girl".

8. 'ABX was the radical leftist hippie radio station in Detroit
and that was at a time when ALL FM stations and DJ's were leftists.

5. Thanks
That's a great site for radio from the past. We had some great ones. From CKLW to the Midnight Cafe to the Electrifying Mojo.

3. I'll do ya one better

I remember listening to the radio that day. It was on the "Lunch with Lubin" show. If I remember right he "Jerry Lubin" was interviewing Patti for the show, I guess Nugent was going to be interviewed next, he came in the studio early. When he came in the studio he must of come over to Smith and either started to feel her up or made a physical move toward her, all I remember Smith saying is "Get your fu**ing hands off me" I remember Nugent giving a whoa or something and then they quickly cut to commercial, if I remember correctly the f*ck got out over air, I remember I was taping the show on a cassette that day but it's long gone.

I instantly thought Patti Smith was the greatest after that interview, and I liked her even more when she stuck up for Ralph Nader on the Randi Rhodes show and Rhodes basically put her and Nader down and called her a psychotic for the next day and a half. The main reason I don't take Rhodes seriously to this day. As far as Patti's concerned she's the greatest, and as honest as Ralph Nader. I just wish alot of other so called Democrats were also.

4. Randi and Patti
I listened to the Randi interview off the archives at her website a while back. She asked Patti why Nader hadn't been actively campaigning. Randi wouldn't drop the question and kept repeating it louder and faster. I was thinking, "Okay already, move on to the next question." This was before I knew how much many Dems hate Nader so I was surprised by Randi's horrible interview at the time.

Randi's still one of my favorite AAR personalities, but that interview knocked her down a few pegs in my mind.

Ted isn't who he claims to be. THE PUSSYCAT loved the THEATRE.

7. Here's my problem with Randi
Edited on Mon Feb-05-07 09:38 AM by herbbrown
and the many Dems that hate Ralph Nader. Instead of supporting Nader and getting a broader voice into politics and the 2 party dictatorship in this country, they would rather support tyranical coporate candidates like Hillary Clinton who wouldn't even debate an opponent in the Dem Senate race in NY, Jonathan Tasini who had 44 percent of the vote in some polls. This is Democracy? This is what I want the Democratic party to become? Rhodes, while I agree with much of what she says is still a supporter and member of the corporate cash register democracy that this country and my Democratic party has become. She's also a bully which the Patti Smith interview proved. In many ways she's the Bill O'Rielly of the left, but I really shouldn't go that far. I'm just pissed of what my Democratic party is becoming, and no I will not support or vote for Hillary Clinton under any circumstance. I know this is getting far off the focus of the origianal question, I just feel I've got to get some things off my chest. Also go to see the Documentary on Nader "An unreasonable Man" when it comes around. I believe it's at the Detroit Film Theatre in April. Naders on "Democracy Now.org" today I'm listening to it now, which is why my danders probably up.

9. Transcript - Lunch with Lubin - June 16, 1978
In listening back to the tape it sounded slightly physical to me.....

Ted Nugent - Snakeskin Cowboys
Music Fades Out…

…Laughing Fades In

Ted Nugent: Alright
Jerry Lubin: Is your name really Theodore?
TN: It’s true. It’s true.
JL: Theodore, Theodore, Theodore.
TN: And Theodore says hi to young Patricia who just sleazed in the door out there. I see ya out there, Patty. Don’t pretend you’re not here. We smelled ya when you crossed Woodward and Gratiot.
JL (as if not hearing the last comment): Listen is this tune that (Ted Laughs) we just Ted played is that autobiographical?
TN: Snakeskin Cowboys? No actually that’s about queers.
JL: Huh?
TN: No it’s not really auto biographical. No that’s a song…
JL: I thought that maybe you had ah…
TN: Well…
JL: offed some animal and, ah, made a jacket…
TN: Snakeskin? That yeah… Stuff like that, yeah. I used to wear that kinda stuff. In fact I still have some snakeskin boots lurking around some closet somewhere.
JL: Hmm
TN: Yeah, snakeskin cowboys, you know, who the hell you think you are.
JL: What was we were talking about while listening to this that
TN Interrupting: Ah the new band.
JL: The new band.
TN: Here she is! Have a seat. Patty’s gonna make a statement.
(microphone manhandling sounds)
Patty Smith: Out. Out.
TN: She’s gonna make a statement.
PS: It’s 1 o’clock.
TN: 1 o’clock, my rectum, honey. Gimme da mike! (unintelligible)
PS: It’s 1 o’clock.
TN: You’re from New York, I’m from Detroit.
PS: I ain’t from New York.
(microphone manhandling sounds)
TN/PS: (unintelligible)
JL: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute, guys. (smirky tone) We can’t have any fights here in the studio.
TN/PS: (unintelligible)
(microphone manhandling sounds)
PS: Don’t touch me! Don’t touch me!
TN: I know you said that last time.
PS: Get your fuckin’ hands off me!
JL: WoaWellllll.
(microphone manhandling sounds)
TN: Look at this. On the air.
PS: Get your hands off me. And out.
TN: Arite. Arite. We got it.

plastering Patti's ride with "Double Live Gonzo" stickers. I guess Tedly never got beyong junior high states of mind. He was an ass then, and he is an ass now.
