Anyone here remember the Halloween Blizzard of 1991? |
|
It's already been 20 years. I can't believe it. I was 9 at the time and I remember it like it was last year. I was living in St. Paul and, what was it, two feet of snow fell on the ground? It was crazy.

1. I was in college at the time. |
|
The part I remember most was the day after the storm, riding with a friend to her off-campus apartment and the absolutely horrible condition of the roads, since the initial what, 6 inches pretty much just hit the pavement and froze in place. Nasty storm.

not busy streets of downtown Minneapolis with no traffic! It was wonderful and so very beautiful. Peaceful and quiet.

I was at college; it was awesome. I don't remember much about that weekend, though.

8. My mother still brings up the 1940 Armistice Day blizzard |
|
Of course she really went off when she found out her grandchildren didn't know what "Armistice Day" was (to them it's Veteran's Day).
I suppose we'll all be talking about the Halloween blizzard when we're in our 80s.

5. Not only did we get two feet that night, but a couple weeks later we got another two feet |
|
Again, all in one big drop!
The community college where I was working at the time closed due to the weather but made us all use vacation time anyway.

It was awesome. I think I worked that night at the Pizza Hut and was sent home after an hour.

9. Halloween 1991 is still the largest snowfall |
|
in the Twin Cities, but it was not a blizzard. I was living in Roseville at the time and drove up to my parents' house in Lino Lakes on Halloween night. I ended up spending the night. The roads were bad the next day, but by 10am all the main roads were open to traffic. Then on the Monday after Thanksgiving we got another big snowfall, about 15 inches. (The 17.1 inch snowfall last December that caused the dome engineers to intentionally collapse the roof was the second biggest snowfall recorded in the Twin Cities). The story in Sunday's Tribune about the snowstorm said the snow from Halloween was mostly melted three weeks later. I don't remember that, but I guess they have the archives to look at.

I was 30 when that sucker hit. Two decades later it still feels like it happened yesterday.

Two of my friends came over with the plan that we would dress up in costumes and go out bar-hopping. We did go out in spite of the weather and had a good time, although the bars we visited weren't as busy as we'd hoped. They ended up spending the next two days with me because of the snowfall and because my alley wasn't plowed until Saturday afternoon. Good thing I went grocery shopping the day before! Between that and the within-walking-distance liquor and video store, we were set. :)
