GLBT protest this Saturday in St. louis
Heres some info on a protest I am involved in in St. louis. Focus on the Family has been putting up billboards in St. louis about their conversion therapy. They are hosting a "love won out" conference here in St. louis to preach their bigotry. You can see more about the onference at lovewonout.org. Below is the information about our protest. Please consider joining us if you are in the area!

LOVE NEEDS NO CURE!!
Action

TO: All fair-minded people

On February 25, 2006, Focus on the Family is holding their “Love Won Out” conference in St. Louis. This group claims that people can be “cured” of homosexuality. Sadly, this conference will attract persons who may be just coming to terms with their sexual identity or even more distressing, parents who are determined to “save” their children from what they see as the “affliction” of homosexuality.
A group of people from diverse faiths, political groups, psychological and medical professions, and other social action groups are organizing to be present in the vicinity of this conference. We will hold a respectful, joyous, and life, love-affirming demonstration.

We want YOU to be there!!

You have two opportunities to take a stand
for Dignity and Equality

Morning Action will occur from 6:30---8:30AM
(Yes, it’s early—but, conference registration is 7:00am & start time is 8:00 am)

1. I'm glad to see this is happening
I find this "conference" repulsive.

Almost as repulsive is the amount of news coverage it has gotten from the local NBC affiliate (KSDK).

I emailed KSDK about their station giving legitimacy to this group, and the fact that "cures" are known to be ineffective by all legitimate psychological experts.

Unfortunately, I work on Saturdays from 8:30am to 5:00pm, so I can't make it.

2. I'm glad I don't catch tv news much
I think the point that bothers me the most about these conferences is not consenting adults signing themslves up (even though I feel they are being brainwashed too) but rather parents dragging their children to these things becuase they didnt turn out to have the sexual orientation they wanted them to have. I think thats abuse which is a crime and charges should be pressed.

3. agreed
the amount of abuse that parents dump on gay kids (not all, of course, but many, especially many self-proclaimed "Christians") is horrific.

I'd be all for prosecuting them for abuse...but that isn't likely to happen any time soon.

As for TV news...I've noticed KSDK going pretty solidly to the right, so I've stopped watching it. The only time I ever watch local news is first thing in the morning to get weather and traffic, but I can't stand KSDK even that long any more. I've switched to KMOV for the time being. I may end up just watching PBS while I get ready in the morning and checking weather and traffic online.

4. Yeah I think your right about KSDK
Funny you mention that I did happen to catch their newscast last night when they were doing a little fluff peice about how St. louis city will be using Diebold touchscreen voting machines in the next election. They treated it like a joke that during the demo of the machines here they malfunctioned and failed to create a paper log. :eyes:

KTVI Fox 2 seems to do the most coverage of local gay events...which I find somewhat odd with them being part of Fox. However most people I talk to seem to agree it's just because they got an hour to fill.

5. I never watch KTVI
not because I don't like them (although being a Fox affiliate makes me suspicious  ) but because I don't get very good reception of that channel.
