Missouri second in U.S. in lost jobs in past month

Missouri lost 10,700 nonfarm payroll jobs from September to October, the second-largest decrease nationally among the states, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said today.

Michigan reported the largest decline of 18,300 establishment payroll jobs. For both states, that represented a 0.4 percent decline over the month, the largest percentage decline reported nationally.

Missouri’s unemployment rate in October stood at 5.4 percent, up from 5 percent in September. That compared to the national jobless rate of 4.4 percent last month, the bureau said.

The manufacturing, trade and transportation, government, and education and health care sectors all contributed to Missouri’s job cuts in the month.
