Deciding not to run for U.S. Senate in 2008 was one of the most difficult decisions I've ever had to make.

Though happy with my position at New School, I believe our nation is facing a critical moment that challenges us all to public service.

Washington has failed our middle-class. They've failed our rural communities. They've failed the people of Iraq, and they've failed our brave veterans coming home.

A critical trust has been broken, and it is up to us to help restore it. There is no way I could ever turn my back on that duty. When I decided not to run, I did so only because I knew that there was a new generation of leadership capable of meeting the challenges ahead.
