ES&S and the Omaha World Herald
http://www.campaigndesk.org/archives/001140.asp

What isn't minor, however, is the fact that the World-Herald owns part of ES&S, an arrangement that thrusts the objectivity of all its voting machine coverage into the spotlight.

The World-Herald has a mixed record in reporting on ES&S. On Election Day 2002 (and the day after), the paper ran in-depth articles about how well the company's equipment performed. In those articles, the newspaper noted its financial interest in the company, whose machines were used by nearly 60 million voters this year.

1. And don't forget that Nebraska's Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel
was CEO of the company that owned ES&S. He resigned 6 months prior to winning his bid for the Nebraska senatorial seat; so, I'm sure there are no conflicts of interest there.

2. And wasn't his winning a surprising upset?
I thought that I read that Hagel's opponent was a very popular incumbent.

4. Nelson vs. Hagel.
Hagel's 1996 Senate Election

But Nebraska Gov. Ben Nelson failed to keep the seat of retiring Sen. Jim Exon, losing to businessman Chuck Hagel. And Sen. Tom Harkin won a tough race against Rep. Jim Ross Lightfoot

Please note, Ben Nelson is a Democrat in name only. Remember the 50-50 split in the senate? Remember who was asked to come across the aisle to give the Republicans an advantage? Our own Ben Nelson.

I would vote for Hagel in a head-to-head election against Nelson again! Apologies to straight-party voters.

3. I know about Hagel's connection. Wish I hated Hagel, but I don't.
The truth is, I like Hagel (Republican Senator) better than I like Nelson (Democratic Senator-yeah right).

Hagel has represented me well on the hill. Really.

5. Agree with you on Hagel
His association with ES&S makes me leery, but the fact is he seems like a solid person with a good head on his shoulders.

A big plus is that he thinks for himself instead of adhering blindly to the party line.

6. I'm with you
I like both Nebraska senators. I think they represent the state pretty well. Of course, for my money, no one beats Bob Kerry.

7. I like Hagel too, but the ES&S connection always leaves me
wondering. That suspicion in the back of my mind feels like the Chenney/Halliburton thing. (except that I hate Chenney).

However, I was NOT aware that the OWH was part owner in ES&S. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. A lot of NE business have are a little incestuous.

8. Read the Editorial page. The articles written by Harold W. Anderson
would be an instant tip-off.

Talk about media control. We have one newspaper in a city of over a half million. And it's a republican rag.
