Who can cut taxes the most? Re: NE Governor's Race |

*note - this refers to the 2006 election
It seems to be a contest to see who can cut taxes the most. Governor Heineman is saying that since our projected tax revenue is projected to be higher than previously projected, now is the time for a tax cut. Dr. Tom Osborne has agreed with this. I guess we should piss a potential budget surplus down our leg before we even have it in hand. Great idea. Let's have another budget crisis next year! Those are always fun. The other repuke running, Dave Nabitty, is whining that taxes are too high, "Who would want to retire here?" (paraphrasing)with our top bracket as high as it is and with car taxes and property taxes so high?
So let's cut taxes and have a budget crisis! Come on, it's tradition! Why don't we take any surplus we have and invest in Nebraska businesses? We could make low interest loans to small NE businesses or buy stock in large NE businesses or just put it away for a rainy day, but don't throw it down the tax cut hole. No matter how much money you throw down the hole it is never enough. Isn't it sad this is the only vision the republicans have for Nebraska, lower taxes. It's even sadder that this resonates with voters.

I would like to see us build up a bit of a surplus, as shelter from further storms. However, how much do we save? You really can't as a not-for-profit government entity be in the business of stock-piling money. I would like to see SOME of the excess be given back in a tax cut and the remainder put in a "rainy day" fund.
