A quick, rather silly NY question |
|
When walking across the Brooklyn bridge can you see the water directly below your feet?

3. from pictures it looked |
|
like below the walkway it was open between the lanes of traffic going in each direction.. the reason i ask is i am a little scared of heights and especially if it is open beneth my feet.. like grates or whatnot.

I'm not crazy about heights and I'm able to walk and ride my bike over the Brooklyn Bridge. You'll be fine.

5. I think the walk is paved now |
|
I should walk it once
I drive across it every workday and cant see any light coming down,
note the start of the path on the Manhattan side is a island in the middle of Center st between City Hall and the Municipal Building

8. Brooklyn Bridge walk is an NYC MUST! |
|
The pedestrian walkway is a boardwalk (and does not sway like crazy) and you will not get any sense of vertigo on it (you cannot see the water directly below you). Make sure you have your camera because it offers some of the most spectacular views of the city and Brooklyn (my home). Stay to the West side of the walkway as it is divided for pedestrians and bicycles and the bicyclists get the East side of the walk (If you walk from Manhattan to Brooklyn stay to your right at all times!). Then treat yourself to the best friggin' pizza at Patsy Grimaldi's (600° wood burning ovens) and desert at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Company (Oy!). Both are under the bridge on the Brooklyn side on Old Fulton at Water Street. You can also check out Brooklyn Heights Promenade just West of there.

13. not paved, still wooden planks |
|
the only paved portions are on the anchorages, once you're on the span its all wood...
but the wood is and kept in better condition than in the past when there were fairly good sized gaps between the planks and even a few missing....

9. No, you can't see the water under your feet. |
|
But you can see water right over either the right or left edge of the boardwalk. Bring a bottle of water if it's hot.
