A Letter from Rev. Jesse Jackson, Kim A. Gandy, Leslie Cagan, Brent Blackwelder, Gene Bruskin, Connie Hogarth, Curtis Muhammad, Angela Kelly and Michael McPhearson ...

April 2006

Dear Friend,

On April 29th many tens of thousands of people will march in the heart of New York City in an historic March for Peace, Justice and Democracy. We will be marching to say "No!" to the war in Iraq and other destructive policies of our government and "Yes!" to a very different direction for our country.

We are writing to ask you to support this important mobilization by making a generous contribution today.

United for Peace and Justice, RainbowPUSH Coalition, National Organization for Women, Friends of the Earth, U.S. Labor Against the War, Climate Crisis Coalition, Peoples' Hurricane Relief Fund, National Youth and Student Peace Coalition and Veterans For Peace have come together in a unique alliance to organize this action.

The April 29th March for Peace, Justice and Democracy will highlight the broad opposition to the war in Iraq and call for all of our troops to be brought home now. We are also marching for new national priorities based on respect for everyone's civil and human rights and protection of our threatened environment.

Through this effort we are bringing diverse communities together in a common project, projecting our unity as a hopeful counterforce to the actions of those in power in Washington.

By marching in large numbers we will send a clear message to the policy makers of this country: we are not going away, we will continue to work to end the war and bring justice and democracy to our own communities, and we have a vision that represents the desires of a majority of our people and the best of our traditions:

respect for the civil liberties and human rights of all
respect for international law and the sovereignty of other nations
commitment to equality, justice and democracy
The March for Peace, Justice and Democracy will help to set the agenda for the Congressional elections later in the year. Our unified action in the streets is a vital part of that process.

In order to make this march a success, we need to raise at least $100,000 by April 20. Volunteer efforts and staff contributed by the initiating organizations will keep costs down, but additional funds are needed to pay for posters, leaflets, stickers, buttons and other organizing and outreach materials, as well as the day-of expenses, such as sound systems, stage, port-o-johns, a communications system, the rental of tents, trucks, medical supplies, tables and chairs.

Please give as generously as you can in support of this historic mobilization.

You can make a secure online donation by going to http://www.april29.org/april29donate. You can also contribute by credit card over the phone at 212.868.5545, or you can send a check or money order made payable to United for Peace and Justice (please write "April 29" in the memo line). Please mail checks to: United for Peace and Justice, PO Box 607, Times Square Station, New York, NY 10108.

Together, we will let our government, our people and people around the world know that a strong movement for peace, justice and democracy is alive and well in the USA. We can inspire stronger and more effective action on behalf of our agenda all through the year and beyond.

In the words of the Call to Action, "we are coming together to march, to vote, to speak out and to turn our country around!" Join us!

Sincerely,

P.S. Thank you in advance for your generous support! For your convenience, donations of $100 or more are tax-deductible if your check is made payable to our 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor, the A.J. Muste Memorial Institute and you specify "UFPJ/April 29" on the memo line. Due to restrictions by our fiscal sponsor, donations smaller than $100 are not tax deductible and must be made payable directly to United for Peace and Justice. Please specify "April 29" on the memo line.
