4. Thousands Sign Up For N.C. Vigils In Support Of Peace Mom
POSTED: 8:54 pm EDT August 17, 2005
UPDATED: 8:54 pm EDT August 17, 2005

DURHAM, N.C. -- More than 300 war protesters attended a candlelight vigil here Wednesday _ one of several such events scheduled statewide and nationally _ in support for the California woman who has spent nearly two weeks protesting near President Bush's ranch in Texas.

"I think President Bush should meet with her out of respect," Tim Duncan of Raleigh, a sales representative, said of Cindy Sheehan. "She gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country _ her son. Whether he agrees with her or not, he should meet with her."

At least 17 vigils were planned in North Carolina _ including Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, Asheville, Rocky Mount and North Topsail Beach _ to support Sheehan, whose son was an Army soldier killed in Iraq in April 2004.

More than 2,300 people had signed up to attend the events shortly by 6 p.m., 90 minutes before the vigils were to begin. The North Carolina events were among about 1,000 expected to be held across the country. <snip>
