10. It's mine - and I thank you for the note under the windshield
that made my day! Thanks.

I have had many many different messages on my truck over the years, lived in Winston-Salem NC the whole time (lots of trips to Asheville where my son and grandson live), and have not had a lot of trouble. On the sides of the truck is my company's name, so I could be bothered by people, but it has not happened. I make bumper stickers and decals for a living.
As the death toll grows, and as the horror of what Bush is doing in our name mounts, I only see sad faces in the rear view mirror any more.
It was very hard and I shed a few tears when I changed the numbers to 3217 today after returning from a 3 week trip to Europe where my "I did not vote for Bush" bracelet made the visit a bit easier.

I long for the day when I can take it off, in 672 days for the bracelet, and the sooner the better for the death tolls on the truck, and revert to more innocuous political messages.

I still have the ITMFA plate in my glove compartment. They did recall it, once they got wind of the MF part, and miserable failure did not wash. But they did not get it back ! It's a family heirloom now.

Glad to know there's at least a few kindred souls around here. I've found it difficult to interact with like-minded individuals since moving here.

Nice to "meet" you!

16. Aug.19 -07 - I got in trouble with the Lexington Police today
Please if possible give me some feedback if I was justly "punished", am justified to be pretty angry, and if I have any change to beat this thing:

Here is what happened on I-85, 8 am, in Lexington. I was in the truck with my 83 year old mother, the truck still looks similar, except there are a few more stickers: Stop War / Got sons?/ the Iraq -Iran one simulating an odometer/maybe more stickers I can't remember right now, definitely the current number 3706. The ITMFA plate is gone, because it was recalled by the DOMVehicles.

I was driving along at the speed limit, and as I passed a cop car hiding in the median the lid of a medium size plastic tote which was bungeed securely in my truck bed flew off, a few pieces of paper came out of the tote and followed the lid. The cops pulled out and stopped me.

I had my registration, my license, all was legal and good, I have not had but one ticket ever and that was for speeding in 1977. I figured they would apprise me of what happened, and at most warn me, since they saw the lid fly off, which they said they did, and which they said was now at the side of the highway a mile back.

Instead they gave me a ticket with the descriptive wording:
"Did intentionally and recklessly blow litter upon public property not owned by her".

It is for 250 dollars, plus 120 court cost = total due 370.00.

They had very carefully read everything on my bumper. After taking my license and registration they sat behind my Mom and me for about 20 - 25 Min. before coming back with the citation. I asked them if this was a joke. And then one cop said it was dangerous, because some other people could come along and dump trash, and then it would build up causing hazards, and then.... I interrupted him and said I did not have to listen to that, and that I would contest the ticket.

At that point I did not even know how MUCH it was for.

I can't prove it, but I think I was punished for my bumper. I need opinions on my belief that the punishment does not fit the occurrence as it stands.
I don't know how to do research on that, and I don't know what to expect in court one month from now.
Ultimately, I wonder, if the judge upholds this, and I refuse to pay, for how long would they lock me up?

Have any of you ever lost a hat in the wind?
It was kind of like that.

Of course there were two of them to corroborate each other, and my Mom who is visiting will be back in Europe and she did not even see the lid fly.

Any thoughts?

accident. What's going on? I don't have any helpful input. I'm sorry that happened to you. I trust someone with more knowledge will answer you.

18. One suggestion: try really really hard not to fan flames
Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 12:43 AM by struggle4progress
Do I think it's possible that you got the ticket because of your bumperstickers? Well, yes, it's entirely possible and perhaps even likely.

Will you be able to prove it? Not unless you get very lucky.

Will arguing that you were ticketed for political reasons help you at all and will it play well in court? Almost certainly not: an experienced judge will have heard more excuses than you can imagine, always delivered in a wounded "It's so unfair to me" tone -- and it's a good bet bet that would affect how the Right Honorable Wazzizerername interprets any complaint you make

If you decide to fight it, get a lawyer. Until then, do everything possible to figure out how the lid came off the tote and how you can avoid it ever happening again in the future; document your efforts to figure out what happened -- but take the problem seriously: nobody wants to have a stream of stuff flying off somebody's car roof while driving down the highway, cuz it's just not safe.

Love the bumperstickers, BTW!

20. Try the Libby defense
If outing an undercover CIA operative gets you a slap on the wrist how come you have to be fined so heavily for paper that unintentionally blew out?

I guess you could consider yourself lucky. Look what happened in Alice's Restaurant. At least you didn't have to visit your local Army recruiter.

21. There's not much doubt that the cops were repugs or
they would've given you a big smile with thumbs up and helped you get the lid back.
