How vulnerable is Senator Kent Conrad of North Dakota? |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 07:19 PM by imenja
Barbara Boxer's PAC for Change is soliciting suggestions on the campaign to which the group should donate $10,000. Of the choices, Conrad is my favorite. Some have suggested the money be targeted to most the most vulnerable races. So I'd like to know how vulnerable ND voters think Conrad is?

the White House can get current governor John Hoeven to run against him. Hoeven was re-elected governor in 2004 (by a landslide), and he's probably the only republican in the state who has a chance of beating Conrad. If he runs, the race will be close. If he doesn't run, Conrad will likely win easily.

5. Also will not run on the issues |
|
John Hoeven will be the new John Thune. It will not come down to a fair Conrad/Hoeven race, but Conrad vs the Mudslinging.
TV time is as cheap in ND as it is in SD, so lots of outside money will come in to smear Conrad as bad as Daschle recieved.

I guess he can be compared to Thune in that he'll be pursuaded by the White House to run and he'll receive lots of outside money. However, I think Hoeven is more moderate, fairly likeable, and he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to run a dirty campaign. On the other hand, smear tactics weren't exactly needed in his past elections, and the outside money could make a difference.

8. Hoeven really will not run the campaign |
|
as much as Roveian outsiders brought in to massage the message.
Much of the Anti-Daschle material was not Thune-sancationed. Many non-related groups opened up from all sides for lots of Daschle character assaniation.
Hoeven really has no issues to run on as he is more of an placeholder Governor. Put up against Conrad's long record and Hoeven has lots of catch-up to do. What better way than mudslinging?
It is pretty much the sole desire to get someone with a (R) by his name. The GOP then pound Hoeven if elected to toe the line as election payback.

7. Maybe things have changed |
|
since I grew up there, but ND has historically had a republican governor and democratic representative to DC. Generally this is because they know that the democrats will work to bring more money back to the state in the form of farm programs than republicans will.

"1 North Dakota John Hoeven 71% 20%"
He may have a high approval rating, but WHAT does he really have to run on?
All I see is a placeholder Governor who just refuses to rock the boat. Conrad has a long list of things he can run on.

11. This is a state that loved Eduardo Schaeffer to pieces. |
|
A pleasant, empty-suit R governor in this state is a big-time threat.
Hoeven is about 70% likely to run, imo. He's been spending nights at the White House and holding meetings with Karl Rove and the RNSC.

As Conrad has a long, accomplished history. It would be a shame for the vote to come down to has just a D or an R by their name.

13. Sure records matter. But look at what happened to Daschle. |

A popular governor in a Republican state is a formidable threat.
My money would still be on Conrad, of course.

15. Conrad shows true colors... |
|
Conrad can be beat. especially now that he's revealed himself as being in the pocket of the insurance corporations and against healthcare when a majority of americans are for it. Now first of all, I'm a life-long LIBERAL democrat who has ALWAYS voted a straight party democratic ticket. (Even been a delegate to the state democratic convention) but if conrad doesnt change his tune and began voting for those who put him in office rather then for those who line his campaign coffers, I will NOT vote for this RINO. I will began (along with Michaael Moore's help) to actively seek a primary opponent for him and actively campaign for that opponent in order to remove him from office. i know some of you conrad supporters will perhaps belittle my concern and say i'm only one vote but i belong to an fairly large indigenous group who has historically supported him and have always given him comfortable leads in all his races. If conrad does not vote along democratic principles but votes in favor of those who own him, he wont be able to count on our vote. you have been put on notice senator...if you do not vote for a public option, line your pockets well sir since we will remove you from office...
