It brings me great pleasure to introduce you to Richard Chema for Congress
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 05:54 PM by liberalnurse
Let me be the first supporter to have the pleasure of introducing you to a dynamic Democratic Congressional Candidate for Ohio's 3rd District. Richard Chema is an amazing candidate. I am truly impressed! This man stepped up to the plate without hesitation when Dr. Studebaker had to step out of the race...90 days before the election. He is a real hero!

To anyone else, this disadvantage would be just a temporary campaign gig....but to my greatest delight and amazement, Richard Chema is a REAL VIABLE CANDIDATE! He has the grace of a thoroughbred, the passion of Howard Dean, the brilliance of Al Gore and the resume' of a lead character in a John Grisham novel. I am IMPRESSED.

Take a look for yourself!

With America at a major crossroads in its history, Richard Chema decided it was the right time to step forward once again to serve his country. So the decorated Navy veteran resigned from his job of a dozen years as the top federal criminal prosecutor for the Southern District of Ohio and tossed his hat in the ring to represent the Democratic Party as its candidate in the Third Congressional District of Ohio. An anti-terrorism expert, who has trained foreign military commands and law enforcement agencies around the world in how to defeat terrorists, and a renowned military and government lawyer, Chema appears indeed to be the right man for these times. Entering this race was the right thing to do and now was the right time to do it, says Chema, 50. The Democrats need a candidate who can stand toe-to-toe with Mike Turner and beat him in November. I believe I am that candidate.

Chema's background clearly shows he is the right candidate. The son of an East Liverpool, Ohio, steelworker who was awarded a Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge, Chema's life has been dedicated to serving his country and his community. A magna cum laude graduate of Georgetown University, he went on to graduate from The Ohio State University Law School in 1981 in the top five percent of his class. More importantly, it was while at OSU that Dick met his future wife, Susan.

Instead of pursuing a lucrative career in private practice at a big law firm, Dick followed his heart and joined the U.S. Navy and was commissioned as a Lieutenant JG in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. His tours of duty included three years in San Diego where he tried cases before being named Assistant Staff Judge Advocate representing the Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Station at Coronado. He later was assigned to the Naval Legal Service Office in Naples, Italy, where he became the Chief Prosecutor and the Navy's resident expert on foreign criminal jurisdiction. Afterward, he was reassigned to Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for the Navy's most significant criminal appeals. While in the nation's capital, he earned a Masters of Criminal Law degree at the U.S. Army JAG School, and later established himself as an expert in sexual harassment in the military by writing in the Military Law Review, Arresting "Tailhook": The Prosecution of Sexual Harassment in the Military. His final assignment capping off nearly a dozen years on active service was as the attorney advising the Naval Intelligence Command in Washington, D.C. He left active duty as a Lt. Commander and is currently a Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. His naval commenda-tions include a Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals, and a Navy Achievement Medal.

Dick joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio in 1994. In 2001, he became chief of its criminal division supervising prosecutors in Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus. The Southern District of Ohio includes Montgomery, Warren, Highland, Clinton and 44 other counties. Many of his cases have received major local media coverage. In his responsibilities in the Naval Reserve, Dick has taught classes to foreign military officers and law enforcement agencies in Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia on anti-terrorism as part of the Defense Institute for International Studies.

While this is Dick's first campaign as a candidate, he worked tirelessly for John Kerry in 2004. He is a life-long Democrat. Dick has been married to Susan for 24 years and they plan to run a marathon in Prague to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Susan is a former 8-year Navy officer and JAG attorney, and currently is the Chief Litigation Counsel at NCR. They are the parents of two daughters, Alexis, a recent graduate of Georgetown University, and Carrie, a 2006 graduate of the Miami Valley School, who is a freshman at Georgetown.

Michael Turner Rep. Turner has been a good friend to the oil companies. Astoundingly, Rep. Turner has even voted against cracking down on the oil and gas industries' price gouging. The GOP energy bill that Rep. Turner voted for gave billions to oil, gas and nuclear industries. The oil and gas industries have been good to Rep. Turner as well, putting $22,750 in Rep. Turner's campaign coffers. Rep. Turner has received $8,500 from the big drug interests. No surprise that Rep. Turner voted for the GOP Medicare Prescription Drug Bill that will give billions to businesses and the health care industry, bar Medicare from bargaining for lower prices, keep re-importation from Canada illegal and penalize seniors who haven't signed up yet.

HOW TURNER RESPONDS TO HIGH ENERGY PRICES Rep. Turner voted against cracking down on the oil and gas industries price gouging. Rep. Turner voted for the GOP energy bill that gave billions to oil, gas and nuclear industries. Big oil and gas industries have given Rep. Turner $22,750. Any surprise?

REP. TURNER PUTS BIG BUSINESS AHEAD OF AMERICAN WORKERS. Rep. Turner voted to strip overtime protection from millions of workers. Rep. Turner voted to allow federal loans to American companies that have escaped paying U.S. taxes by moving offshore.

GOP "HEALTH CARE" Big drug interests have given $8,500 to Turner over the Representative's career. They know who their friends are. Rep. Turner voted for the GOP Medicare Prescription Drug Bill that will give billions to businesses and the health care industry, while forcing seniors to accept annual increases in premiums and deductibles and a growing gap in coverage for the prescription drugs they buy. Rep. Turner voted against allowing millions of Americans to save their hard-earned dollars on prescription drugs by re-importing them from Canada, even though these were U.S. made and patient safety was ensured.

TIES WITH THE GOP LEADERSHIP Turner received $15,000 from House Majority Leader John Boehner's "Freedom Project" PAC. Turner received $16,598 from GOP Whip Roy Blunt's "Rely on Your Beliefs" PAC. Turner voted with President Bush 90% of the time. Turner voted the GOP party line 94% of the time.

TIES WITH TOM DELAY AND JACK ABRAMOFF Turner has taken: $20,000 from Tom DeLay's ARMPAC. $1,000 from Bob Ney, the first congressman to plead guilty in the Jack Abramoff investigation.

With all of these ties to the DeLay/Abramoff mess, is it any surprise that Turner has: Voted to weaken House ethics rules when DeLay proposed doing so as GOP Majority Leader. Voted with Tom DeLay 94% of the time (through 3/31/2006)

SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS Rep. Turner voted to continue awarding contracts to Halliburton even if the Pentagon's own audit processes found that more than $100 million of their contractor's costs in Iraq were unreasonable. Rep. Turner opposed expanding access to the military's TRICARE health insurance program to thousands of Reservist and National Guard members, even though 20 percent of all Reservists do not have health insurance, and 40 percent of Reservists aged 19 to 35 lack health coverage. Rep. Turner voted against granting a bonus to grant a $1,500 bonus to every American service member serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, including National Guard and Reserve forces.

THE ENVIRONMENT 1,861 water systems in 29 states have been contaminated with MTBE, exposing as many as 45 million Americans to this potential carcinogen, but Rep. Turner voted to protect the companies responsible from lawsuits by communities that need their help to clean up these systems. Rep. Turner voted against bipartisan reform of the Endangered Species Act. Rep. Turner voted for a massive sell off of public lands to mining interests.

HOW DOES TURNER SUPPORT....

HIGHER EDUCATION? While tuition costs are rising for ordinary Americans, Rep. Turner voted to cut Federal student aid by $12.7 billion -- the biggest such cuts in history.

STEM CELL RESEARCH? Rep. Turner sided with social conservatives against patients with debilitating diseases and voted against expanding Federal funding of stem cell research.
