1. argh....
I dont have a problem with places that decide to go smoke free... i.e. restaurants...

but bar owners should have a say if they want their location to be smoke free

9. I agree
It would have been the right thing to do. I went down to the corner pub Sat. night and lit up and thought to myself that that could be the last time. Everyone in there was smoking, including the barkeep. Most of the people in there were regulars and the place doesn't get packed. I'm guessing they won't be open much longer.

8. There's a big difference
between Cali and Ohio in the month of December, I've lived in both, so I know. You can go outside to a smoking area in Cali and it's not so
bad, you can still taste the flavor of the tobacco. Try doing that on
a cold windy Saturday night in Ohio, It'll be an exercise in futility.

3. uh-oh.....looks like another location off of my "will to visit soon" list
but, hey, the most remarkable thing about Ohio (and I lived there for 2.5 years) is that MOST of the people of Ohio, you know the ones who LOVE IT....have NEVER been outside of OHIO (forget being outside of the US)!!!! .... ask for yourself the ones who most love it....so, where else have you been/lived?.....and it's like the "deer in the headlights look".

It's the truth!

Guess I have a sort of "love/hate" relationship with Ohio :eyes: <-----maybe "distaste" is a more accurate word

4. I live in Ohio and am glad to be back in my home state
and that's after having lived elsewhere for 18 years.

There are times I have a love/hate relationship with it too. But one of the things I have hated about it is how much longer it has taken to get secondhand smoke out of public areas. And that's all I'm going to say about that.

12. It's only one step--now only if they could make bars less noisy, I would go back
"Noise-Free Ohio" -- Do you think it will sell?

Seriously, though, I have some sympathy for your concern. Smoking just seems to be part of the bar culture in many bars.

I suppose another ballot measure could undo the bars prohibition. That would take a lot of time to develop and be long after the prohibition goes into effect next month. I have not read the new law carefully. If the law respects the principle of "Home Rule" as written in the Ohio Constitution, perhaps local governments could legislate that some or all bars in their town allow smoking. For that matter, Ohio government could just pass a law allowing smoking in bars. Just musing

I voted for issue 5 and against issue 4.
Funny how tobacco companies tried to fool voters by presenting issue 4 as a reasonable smoking ban. I guess voters are smarter and more informed than tobacco companies gave them credit for.

What's funnier is that the religious right and the repukes got so many people to fall for the nanny law. Let's see what they put next on the ballots to tell you how to run your life. Maybe anti-choice laws would be funny too.

13. Call it the punish smokers act of 2006
There is no way to make a reasonable accomodation for your smoking employees in the workplace.

You cannot have a designated smoking area inside a building, even if it has seperate ventilation.

You cannot have an OUTSIDE enclosed area with a roof and walls on 3 sides that is only designated for smoking.

All smokers go stand out side in the rain now!

And issue 5 won by lying about issue 4. Their "allows smoking in restaurants" claim? You can write any smoking ban law you want -- but issue 4 would have allowed a restaurant to have a smoking area IF
AND ONLY IF it was a seperate enclosed area, seperated from the rest of the restaurant by walls and doors, and with a seperate ventillation system.

So, woo hoo all you that voted for issue 5 -- most of you in cities that ALREADY had bans anyway. The only place where you wouldn't have been able to ban smoking is a BAR. And I'm sure that a good percentage of bars would have remained non-smoking.

But who the hell is for choice when you can force others to conform to your will, not allow a way to make a reasonable accomodation, and generally PUNISH smokers!

19. majority rules eh
yeah I guess you're right, that's how they were able to have legal slavery in this land, that's how they decided to determine people with a certain skin color could not quite qualify as a full person.

And the majority that really talks is the majority of dollars in your pocket...or even worse, the other guys

This was a main fear the founding fathers had about a straight democracy and majorities. They tried to make a republic and set guidelines to protect the minority somewhat....I know, I know, it didn't work and was half hearted and all, and was basically hijacked from the get go...not to worry, It'll only take a few more with your attitude till they start euthanizing infants with birth defects, or them useless old people dragging the majority down...

28. I think you do
quote:

------------------------
I have no idea
------------------------

but you just don't care... that this bill gives the government power to come invade and police people in their own homes or PRIVATE businesses on the complaint of one unhappy citizen or actually no complaint at all if they so decide.

There are supposed to be restrictions on this sort of thing, just as there are restrictions on some yahoo who's intent on putting the reinstitution of slavery or euthanasia on the ballot.

--------------------------------------------------

I know how this will all work, I lived in California, The cops have had a field day with the shakedowns, targetting tiny bars( you know the ones that maybe aren't so tight with city hall or the chamber of commerce) right when they're slammed, sending in their own people to light up when the bartender is so busy she has no chance to 86 the patron fast enough. Well they don't stop with checking people for tobacco if you get my drift.

25. well, I don't think non-smokers would suffer
if businesses have separate rooms with separate ventilation for smokers. Issue 5 went too far - it wasn't about protecting non-smokers from second hand smoke, it was about taking away rights. It is ridiculous to think that a business cannot have a separate room with separate ventilation to allow smoking.

The law is overreaching and ridiculous.

26. Bingo!
I voted against both 4 and 5 because I don't think we need the state interfering in matters such as this. What's next? Regulating the fat content in the food we eat at the smoke-free restaurants, or legally limiting the number of drinks we can buy at the smoke-free bar?

I don't think I'm overreaching here. You open the door a little and someone no doubt will try to open it all the way.

(I'm a non-smoker, by the way.)

A lot of people got snowed and they don't know it. A lot of people will be losing their small businesses and this also kicked the door open for more infringements on your personal life.

17. They passed the ban in Washington, and even though I voted against it
I've found that it hasn't affected my smoking friends who go to bars, and has actually increased bar-going with my non-smoking friends (I don't smoke, BTW). In fact, I go to my favorite places more often because now the non-smokers will go there too. It hasn't decreased business in Washington.

smoke all my 61 years. I've had smokers blow smoke in my face on purpose. I've listened to your whining about infringements on your rights all the while you have laughed at my rights.

I've gone into smoke filled bars because there have never been any smoke free bars.

Stop your sissy whining and get your ass to a doctor and quit smoking. It will be good for you and everyone around you including your childen. It will save you money and it will even make your food taste better.

This issue was a petition referendum and was voted on by your neighbors, friends, coworkers and families and IT won by a sizable majority. Live with it, those of us that have lived in your cloud for years stood up and said ENOUGH!

37. I don't have stress over this and as for
my being whiny, well I guess you smokers haven't looked in a mirror lately. I've been hearing from smokers for years about having their rights denied and, as I said, not one of them has ever thought about my rights. I even had one boss designate an area that was not his office and which had to be used by everyone in the department as a smoking area because he had to use it often. It became a congregating point for all the smokers and the non-smokers had to live with it whenever they used that inspection room.

Yes, your second hand smoke is deadly, it is also annoying and a nuisance.

This (And you haven't been breathing in my smoke for 61 years, I am only 42) is just stupid, as if you really thought I meant you personally. I'm sure you could do better than that if you put down that butt and cleared your mind a little.

This is NOT being imposed by Government. It is your friends and neighbors htat passed this and now you have to live by the new rules or chenge your behavior for the better.

36. Drunk drivers are more dangerous
Drunk drivers are more dangerous than people who smoke.

Bars encourage people to leave their house and drive while drunk.

Kind of crazy how we have fucked up priorities. I will find it ironic if one of these non smokers that "can go back to bars" will get into a drunk driving accident on their way home after drinking.
