1. Suggestions
I went to the Obama rally in Germantown in Phila a couple weeks ago. It was well organized, but it did require standing for several hours, first in line to get into the gate, then to go through security and then in the actual rally.

They did not allow people to bring chairs or signs. However, you may wish to bring a small blanket to sit on if you have trouble standing for hours at a time. If you get a chance to sit, I would take advantage of it.

When you get into the rally, and you want to take photos, I suggest trying to determine where the sun will move to by the time Obama speaks.

I suggest bringing a water bottle. They did pass out water bottles at the Philadelphia rally, but I wouldn't count on it.

4. Get in line 3 hours before the start time
Edited on Mon Oct-27-08 08:30 PM by JPZenger
I'd get in line 3 hours before the official start time. Parking will be difficult.

At the rally I attended, they put several thousand people through security screening and let them close to Obama. Then everyone else who did not get through security screening before it started was kept behind a barricade.

I was worried that I would get close to Obama and then would have to use the bathroom and lose my spot before it started. Therefore, I didn't eat or drink anything for hours before.

Here's a campus map:

6. Another question --
Did you get close enough to shake his hand? Any suggestions for that possibility?

7. He didn't shake hands at the rally I attended
I attended the 3rd out of 4 rallies that were closely scheduled in Philadelphia. He didn't have time to shake hands. However, I had decided in advance I was more interested in getting photos than in shaking hands. You may need to make a choice. If you want to shake his hands, try to figure out where he comes in and leaves. That will probably be the opposite side from the public entrance, and will near a street.

I stood in an area next to the area for persons with disabilities, separated by fencing. That would have provided some protection in case the crowd surged to the front to shake hands.
